Mountain Hawks set to wrap up fall schedule at Frostbite Regatta Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team is set to wrap up its fall schedule on Saturday when it heads to Cherry Hill, New Jersey for the Frostbite Regatta on the Cooper River. It will mark the first time the program competes in the Frostbite Regatta since 2016. The Mountain Hawks were last in action for Class Day on the Lehigh River in Allentown, which saw the juniors come out victorious.

This Saturday's racing will be 2,000 meters, like the Mountain Hawks will see in the spring. Lehigh's first race of the day is set for 12 p.m.

It hasn't been the easiest road since the last competition, but the team has kept a strong mindset and mentality.

"We've had some illness go through the team the past couple weeks, so we've been doing our best to mitigate how much that has affected our training and I do think the team overall has done its best with the preparation," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We have also shortened up a lot of the work we were doing earlier in the season, so we could be used to racing at the higher race cadences. We tried to get the athletes to be comfortable being uncomfortable. "

Execution has been an area of focus, turning what's done in practice into race day.

"We want to make sure we get our blades in together and at the right position so we can be most effective through the water," said Conley. "I believe we're getting better at it, and now we have to do it in an actual race setting."

Saturday will be a culmination of a productive fall, which has featured important strides. The Mountain Hawks hope to end on a strong note.

"All year, we have been talking about the process," said Conley. "We want to race like we practice, which was a struggle at Navy Day (Oct. 12 regatta).  I believe we have come a long way since then, but we still need to get it done.  If we can stay focused on our boat, I believe it will be a very successful weekend for the entire program."
