BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh track and field coach Matt Utesch announced on Wednesday the hiring of Khayla Atte and Taylor Bernstein as assistant coaches to the Mountain Hawk staff.
"We are thrilled to welcome both Khayla and Taylor to the Lehigh community," stated Utesch. "They will both bring tons of energy and knowledge to our program and help our student-athletes develop."
For the past six years, Atte had served as the William Penn Charter Girls Track Coach where she coached approximately 45 female athletes in 15 separate events during the indoor and outdoor seasons. In the spring, Atte's girls distance medley relay team was the 2019 PTFCS Indoor State Champions. Atte graduated from Lehigh in 2005, while she was a student-athlete for the Mountain Hawks. Atte was on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and will serve as the sprints coach this year. She is ranked in the top-10 all-time in the 60m hurdles, indoor triple jump, pentathlon and the outdoor triple jump.
"(Atte) brings an amazing amount of energy to our program. She will bring an infusion of spirit that seems to have grown over the years when she was an athlete on this team," Utesch said. "She has a quick wit, great sense of humor and has developed a high school program that would be the envy of any Athletic Director. I am certain she will bring all of her talents to the program and will only be a positive. Please welcome her back to her home to Lehigh."
Bernstein comes to Bethlehem after previously serving on the staff at Bryant University the past two years. Throughout the past four years, Bernstein has coached at Bryant, Rider and the Stevens Institute of Technology. As an undergrad at Monmouth, he was a four-year member and a captain of his track and field team. In 2015, he was named the MAAC Outdoor Most Outstanding Field Performer, after winning championship titles in the shot put and the discus.
"(Bernstein) brings some great experience along with an elevated enthusiasm to a young but accomplished group of throwers. We have had some time to see Taylor in action this fall and he is a great teacher of the throwing events," added Utesch. "He has managed to plug in his expertise right where the athletes need him. He's not taking anything for granted and working really hard. With regard to recruiting, we have already had a number of commitments from throwers, so clearly the future foundation of the group is being set in place."
You can see Atte and Bernstein and the rest of the Mountain Hawks on Dec. 6., in which the Brown and White will host the Fast Times Before Finals, followed by the Angry Birds Challenge on Jan. 11.
