Red-hot Mountain Hawks geared up for Bahamas Hoopfest Classic

11/26/2019 4:36:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh women's basketball team is the only remaining undefeated team left in the Patriot League after starting the year with a 5-0 overall record. The Mountain Hawks are looking to continue to build momentum, especially after a 75-68 victory over Seton Hall Friday night at Stabler Arena. The win over the Pirates is the program's first since the 1985 season.

With matchups in the Bahamas against Ball State and Fordham, the Mountain Hawks will be attempting to start the season 7-0 for the first time since the 2014-15 season. It would be the program's second-best start to a season in history behind the 1984-85 Lehigh women's 10-0 start of the year.

For senior guard Camryn Buhr, Friday night was just another day in the office, as she put up 20 points and 11 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. Senior forward Cameryn Benz also had herself a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. Buhr and Benz became the first Lehigh teammates to record a double-double since Lexi Martins (17 pts., 18 reb.) and Kerry Kinek (16 pts., 10 reb.) on Jan. 6, 2016 vs. Loyola (Md.).

Lehigh will be embarking on an international road-trip with regular season games for the first time in program history when they partake in the Thanksgiving weekend Bahamas Hoopfest Classic. During the stay, the Mountain Hawks will be partnering with local schools, participating in volunteering in addition to playing basketball games.

The Ball State women's basketball team has had a great start to the 2019-20 season, starting the year 3-2 and are coming off back-to-back victories, a 70-49 win against Xavier and a 74-70 victory over Butler.

The Cardinals have key players averaging double scoring figures with both Oshlynn Brown (10.8 ppg) and Anna Clephane (10.8) leading the way. Brown is also averaging a near double-double with 9.2 on the year so far.

Against the Bulldogs on Saturday, Ball State won its game on free throw shooting, going 23-of-30 from the line, to earn a four-point win.

Four players finished in double figures, with Jasmin Samz leading the way with 16 points, including 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Thelma Dis Agustsdottir added 11 points and seven boards while Oshlynn Brown and Estel Puiggros had 10 points each. Brown, who is nearly averaging a double-double this year, also had 11 rebounds for the 20th of her career.

The matchup with Ball State in Nassau will be the third all-time between the two teams and the second meeting played at a neutral site.

The last time Lehigh faced the Cardinals came in the finals of the Christmas City Classic back in 2002, a 94-71 victory for Ball State at Stabler Arena. Lehigh will be looking for its first-ever win over Ball State on Thanksgiving, 0-2 all-time vs. the Cardinals.

The 2019 Atlantic 10 Champions and NCAA Tournament qualifiers, Fordham Women's Basketball came into the 2019-20 season had a lot of the same expectations, but has struggled out of the gate through the team's first six games.

The Rams have won back-to-back games over Northeastern and Charlotte after starting the year 0-4.

Fordham had two players score 20 or more points against the 49ers on Sunday. Anna DeWolfe led the team with 25 points, while Kaitlyn Downey finished with 24 points, including going 6-of-8 from the 3-point line. Kendall Heremaia led the way with a game-high 14 rebounds, also adding eight points.

The team will open the Bahamas Hoopfest Classic on Friday at 4 p.m. against No. 25 Arkansas before taking on the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh and Fordham have a common opponent this season in George Washington. The Mountain Hawks topped the Colonials, 59-53 earlier this season on Education Day.

Saturday's matchup will be the 15th meeting between Lehigh and Fordham in both program's histories.

The matchup dates back to the 1976-77 season, but from 1991 to 1995 served as a twice-a-year game as the Rams are former members of the Patriot League. Fordham beat Lehigh in all 12 of its Patriot League contests over the years, but the Mountain Hawks got revenge in the last two matchups in 2007 and 2009.

Saturday's contest will be the first time Lehigh has played Fordham in 10 years.

Both matchups will have audio streams provided through Lehighsports.com with Matt Markus on the play-by-play call. Coverage for both games begin at 3:50 p.m.
