Lehigh aims to extend win streak to five vs. Seton Hall Friday
11/21/2019 1:16:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh women's basketball has started the year with a 4-0 record for the first time since the 2015-16 season. Lehigh now hosts Seton Hall Friday on Knoebels Night at 6 p.m., where the first 100 fans will receive a free $10 ticket booklet.
The Mountain Hawks, picked to win the Patriot League in the preseason, sit atop the standings with Colgate through the first couple weeks of the season and are currently ranked 19th in the latest College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 poll.
Lehigh's offense is led by senior guard Camryn Buhr, coming off a 20-point, eight rebound effort on Monday night in a 70-51 victory over Central Connecticut State at Stabler Arena. Buhr has scored in double-figures in each of her first four games of the year, which is comparable to the start of her 2018-19 season where the guard scored in double-digits through the first 12 games on the schedule.
The Lehigh bench has been a huge component in the team's success so far during the 2019-20 season, carrying the offensive charge at times and making big, important stops on defense as well. Lehigh has had 30 or more points out of the bench in three straight games, out-scoring all four team's benches by a considerable margin in each game. As for the D, Lehigh has the best scoring defense (52.5 ppg) in the Patriot League and the 40th best in the country. Sophomore forward Emma Grothaus leads all bench players averaging 9.3 points per game and just a tick above six boards per contest.
Lehigh is 2-0 at Stabler Arena so far this season and will look to make it 3-0 against the Pirates before heading back on the road for one of the marquee trips of the whole year, a two-game stint in Nassau, Bahamas for the Bahamas Hoopfest Classic over Thanksgiving Weekend.
After the first five games of the season, Seton Hall is 4-1 and its only loss came against a very strong Princeton team on Nov. 15, when the Pirates fell, 78-76 despite a strong 27 point performance for Alexis Lewis.
Its last time out, Seton Hall took down Saint Joseph's at Fordham, 55-39. Four players scored in double-figures while Desiree Elmore led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds, to go along with three steals while shooting 7-of-12 from the field. The Pirates shot just 39.3 percent from the field and 27.8 percent from beyond-the-arc, but forced 23 Hawk turnovers.
Saint Joseph's marked the second team this season that Seton Hall held without a 3-point field goal. The Hawks were 0-for-12 from downtown and VCU was 0-for-10 in an earlier season win.
Like Buhr, Seton Hall's Alexis Lewis has scored in double-figures in four straight games. Three Seton Hall players are averaging double-figures in scoring with Elmore (16.4), Lewis (14.4) and Barbara Johnson (10.8). Shadeen Samuels is averaging 9.5 points per game to go along with her 8.5 rebounds per game.
This will be the seventh meeting all-time between Lehigh and Seton Hall and the first in 13 years. The Mountain Hawks fell to Pirates the last time out at Stabler Arena on Dec. 30, 2006 by a slim three-point margin, 51-48. It has been 34 years since Lehigh last defeated Seton Hall, coming on the road on Nov. 25, 1985 in a 72-65 victory.
Friday night's game will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network with coverage slated to begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are available here, at the box office or over the phone by calling 610-7LU-GAME.
