BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh women's basketball team will have a shot to start the season 4-0 for the first time since the 2015-16 season when it hosts Central Connecticut State Monday evening at Stabler Arena. The game will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network and will begin at 5:30 p.m.
This is the second consecutive season the Mountain Hawks have started a year 3-0 after a defensive-oriented 59-53 victory over George Washington last Wednesday on Education Day. Lehigh's defense forced 28 turnovers and had 12 total steals.
The Mountain Hawks' bench led the way against the Colonials, scoring 31 of Lehigh's 59 points including 28 combined between Mary Clougherty (14) and Emma Grothaus (14). Senior guard Camryn Buhr scored 10 points, making it three consecutive games she's scored in double-digits.
14 of those points also came from the free throw line, as Lehigh went 14-of-19 from the charity stripe. Grothaus was 5-for-6 from the line, while Buhr was 4-for-6.
The win for Lehigh gave it it's eighth win all-time on Education Day, improving the morning game record to 8-3 in 11 meetings.
The matchup with the Blue Devils will be the second of three during this home-stand before the Thanksgiving trip to The Bahamas.
It's been three straight games and three straight losses for Central Connecticut State, who are still looking for win No. 1 in the 2019-20 campaign. The Blue Devils are coming off a 83-73 loss to Brown on Nov. 14, following a narrow, 81-73 defeat to Pitt of the ACC.
Junior guard Emma McCamus leads the team averaging 17 points per game so far this year, shooting 41.0 percent from the free throw line. She scored 30 points with five 3-pointers and a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line in the loss to Brown, playing nearly 35 minutes on the floor.
Two other Blue Devils are averaging double-digits in scoring, as juniors Ashley Forker (12.3 ppg) and Ashley Berube (12.7) are among the team's leaders.
44 of CCSU's 73 points were scored in the paint. Not only would this be the first win of the season for the team, but it would earn head coach Beryl Piper her 150th career victory.
The last time Lehigh played CCSU was last season, when the Mountain Hawks came away with a 88-62 win. Four Lehigh scorers finished in double-digits, as Gena Grundhoffer led the way with 17 points. Hailey Pascoe added 14, while both Camryn Buhr and Cameryn Benz had 12 points.
The Mountain Hawks shot 44.8 percent (30-for-67) from the field and 42.3 percent (11-for-26) from beyond-the-arc. Lehigh led by as many as 30 points near the end of the third quarter and held on for a 26-point victory.
CCSU will be Lehigh's second NEC opponent of the 2019-20 season so far after beating Merrimack, 72-68 in overtime back on Nov. 9.
