Paetzell, Humphreys, Kutler win titles at Journeymen Collegiate Classic

TROY, N.Y. – The Lehigh wrestlers won Hammer Awards for winning the top flight of their respective weight classes as the Mountain Hawks had a strong showing at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic. Junior Brandon Paetzell (125) and sophomore Josh Humphreys (157) both went 3-0 to win their respective weights, while senior Jordan Kutler (174) went 4-0 to win his third straight Hammer Award. The trio led the way for the 17 Mountain Hawks who competed on Sunday.

"Today was a step up from last week," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "We competed better, but there are still a few guys that have some things to correct by next weekend. They are easy fixes, but we have to work hard on those areas."

Paetzell's day began with a 6-3 decision over Alex Thomsen of Nebraska and then continued with an impressive technical fall over Christian Moody of Oklahoma. In the final round, Paetzell won the takedown battle 2-0 to beat Kilian Cardinale of Old Dominion 5-3.

"He looked really good," Santoro said. "He just keeps coming. He keeps trying to score points the whole time and it paid off for him. He did a nice job in all three positions."

Humphreys won his first two bouts, including a first period pin and in the finals, a second period reversal and four point near fall proved to be the difference in a 6-1 win over Alex Klucker of Lock Haven.

"Josh controlled the matches for the most part," Santoro said. "He has to do the work in those certain positions and he'll go to another level, because he's right there. He just needs to let himself do that."

Kutler won his first three bouts with a first minute pin and two 8-0 major decisions, setting up a highly-anticipated matchup with Mikey Labriola of Nebraska. Kutler scored a first period takedown and was strong on top in the first and third periods on the way to a 4-1 decision.

"That was a good match for him," Santoro said. "Labriola's really good. It was a good win. (Jordan) was really composed and wrestled hard. That was a good win for him."

Three other Mountain Hawks claimed second place in their respective weight classes. Sophomore Jimmy Hoffman enjoyed a strong showing at 149, defeating Division II national champion Chris Eddins of Pitt-Johnstown 6-2 in his first bout of the day and adding a strong 4-1 win over Josh Maruca of Arizona State. Hoffman scored first in his finals bout with Collin Purinton of Nebraska, but Purinton answered with a third period takedown to hold off Hoffman 4-3.

Sophomore Luke Resnick (125) and junior Dylan Ammerman (184) won their first two bouts at lower flights, but came up short in pool finale matches.

Three Lehigh grapplers went 2-1 to place third in their brackets. At 141, senior Ryan Pomrinca won his first bout of the day 9-4 over Cory Crooks of Arizona State. After a loss to Sa'Derian Perry of Old Dominion, Pomrinca erased a two point third period deficit and went on to defeat Paul Konrath of Indiana 7-5 in sudden victory.

Junior Chris Weiler bounced back from a loss in his first match to post a pair of 6-1 victories at 184, including a 6-1 decision over Tanner Orndorff of Utah Valley in his final bout of the day. Junior heavyweight Jordan Wood won two decisions over Oklahoma opponents, but placed third after suffering a 5-2 defeat to Tate Orndorff of Utah Valley. Orndorff picked up two top five wins on the day, beating Tanner Hall of Arizona State to win the Hammer.

The Mountain Hawks will open their dual schedule next Saturday when they welcome No. 4 Oklahoma State to Stabler Arena for a 1 p.m. match. Tickets are available and can be purchased online at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during business hours.
