1/22/2019 11:21:00 AM | Men's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following two straight games at home, the Lehigh men's basketball team heads to Navy on Wednesday to face the Midshipmen. Opening tipoff in Alumni Hall is set for 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks stand 4-2 on the season, most recently falling to Bucknell 85-83 in a thriller that went down to the final seconds. One third through the league slate, the Mountain Hawks stands tied for second in the standings - tied with Army West Point and one game ahead of several teams, including Navy, at 3-3.
Along with the normal Patriot League Network, Wednesday's game will also be televised on Stadium's Over-The-Air stations across the nation. For a complete list of stations, please click here (TV) and here (Cable). Stadium can be found on Verizon Fios Channel 820 across a good majority of the nation.
On Saturday vs. Bucknell, Lehigh scored five points in the matter of seconds to pull even at 83 with less than 10 seconds remaining. Senior Lance Tejada knocked down a three to pull Lehigh within 83-81, then the Mountain Hawks forced a steal and Tejada found a cutting Pat Andree who converted the layup to pull Lehigh even. However, on the other end, Bucknell's Jimmy Sotos finished a tough shot to give the Bison the two-point win.
Saturday's game saw neither team lead by more than six points. Lehigh's largest lead came early in the first half and midway through the second, 62-56. The Mountain Hawks opened a 76-72 lead with just over four minutes remaining, but a 10-0 Bucknell run down the stretch proved to be the difference.
Senior Kyle Leufroy led the offense with a game (and career) high 26 points, shooting 9-of-15 from the field, including 6-of-9 from three-point range. He added eight rebounds, five assists (to eclipse 250 in his career) and season-high three steals. Leufroy moved up two spots from 24th to 22nd place in school history for career points (currently 1,235). One of the people he passed was Austen Rowland who scored 1,230. Ironically enough, it happened on Saturday in a game Lehigh Athletics honored its 2004 Patriot League Championship Team, a team in which Rowland was the leading scorer. On Saturday, Tejada posted 15 points (12 coming in the first half), finishing 4-of-7 from long distance and tying a career-high seven assists. Sophomore James Karnik just missed his third straight double-double at home, posting 14 points and nine rebounds. Andree also had 14 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Lehigh knocked down eight of its first nine three-pointers, finishing 14-of-23 for the game (60.9 percent). It marked the Mountain Hawks' third game this season eclipsing 60 percent from distance (and fifth shooting 50 percent or more). Lehigh is now shooting 47.0 percent from three on the season, four percent better than anyone else in the nation (Creighton is currently second at 43.0). The Mountain Hawks shot 51.7 percent from the field overall, as their 48.6 percentage on the year is now 30th.
The Mountain Hawks did struggle on the boards, with Bucknell holding a 41-29 edge. Lehigh also struggled from the free throw line, shooting 53.8 percent (7-of-13). After Wednesday's showdown at Navy, the Mountain Hawks return home on Saturday to host Boston University at 2 p.m.
Navy enters Wednesday with a 6-11 record, 3-3 in Patriot League play. The Midshipmen are 2-1 at home in the league (with wins over Colgate and Holy Cross) and 1-2 on the road. Navy has played its last two on the road, winning at Lafayette (85-77) and falling at Army West Point (72-61). George Kiernan leads the team in scoring (12.6) and rebounding (5.1) while Cam Davis is right behind at 11.1 points per game. Hasan Abdullah comes in at 9.5 points and 4.1 boards while John Carter Jr. is averaging 7.3 and 5.0, respectively. Navy is 10th in the Patriot League in scoring offense (64.4), but fifth in scoring defense (72.1).
Lehigh dropped both its meetings vs. Navy last season and three of the last four overall as the Mids lead the all-time series 47-31. Even with the recent struggles, losing three-of-four, the Mountain Hawks have still won 14 of their last 18 games against the Midshipmen. Lehigh's only other loss in the last 17 contests came on Jan. 20, 2016 at Lehigh as Navy won, 69-64. The Mountain Hawks responded that season by winning at Navy, 77-74 and winning in the
Patriot League Quarterfinals, 65-63. The teams first met in 1910-11, a 31-24 Navy victory. Lehigh's first win was in 1925-26 by a 25-23 final
After Wednesday, the Mountain Hawks return home on Saturday to host Boston University at 2 p.m. as part of Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Week. Tickets are available online and can be purchased by clicking here.
