Mountain Hawks visit Penn Saturday in Patriot-Ivy showdown

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh looks to get back on track and build some momentum heading into its bye week as the Mountain Hawks make the short trip to Philadelphia to battle Penn Saturday at Franklin Field. The Mountain Hawks are coming off back-to-back losses to Villanova and FBS member Navy to fall to 1-2 on the season. Playing its first FBS foe since 2003, Lehigh got a 147-yard, two-touchdown performance from Patriot League Rookie of the Week Rashawn Allen, but Navy's triple option attack led by quarterback Malcolm Perry proved too strong as the Mids prevailed 51-21.

Allen made the most of his first career start, with a 16-carry, 147-yard, two touchdown effort at Navy. Subbing for the injured Dom Bragalone, Allen raced around the left side for a 75-yard touchdown on Lehigh's first play from scrimmage and later added a 26-yard score in which he broke free from the pile after it appeared he was stopped. Allen was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday. Lehigh last had a freshman rush for 100-plus yards in 2015 when Bragalone accomplished the feat five times and Micco Brisker did so against Penn.

The numbers may be skewed slightly after battling Navy's high-powered triple option attack, but the Lehigh defense has shown considerable improvement over the previous few seasons. Lehigh allowed an average of 41 points and 477.7 yards of offense per game last season, but in its first two games allowed 25 points and 352.5 yards per game, highlighted by limiting Saint Francis to 58 rushing yards, the fewest allowed by a Lehigh defense since 2015.  The Mountain Hawks have totaled 23 tackles for loss, five sacks and three interceptions through two games. Lehigh has also improved its third down defense, allowing opponents to convert at a 33 percent clip, after allowing 37.5 percent last season. Senior safety Sam McCloskey and junior linebacker Keith Woetzel are Lehigh's top tacklers with both players setting, or tying career highs for tackles against Navy.

After earning first team All-Patriot League honors as a kicker and punter as a sophomore, injuries limited Ed Mish at times in both capacities last season. Now healthy, Mish looks to regain the form that saw him go 62-for-62 on extra points (a school record for PATs made) as a sophomore, while averaging 43 yards per punt. Mish became Lehigh's career leader in extra points last season and earned second team All-Patriot League honors as a kicker. Mish eclipsed the 200 point mark against Saint Francis and currently sits 17 points behind Erik Bird's career record for kick scoring at Lehigh. Mish currently holds Lehigh's career record for net punting average at 42.4 yards per punt. He averaged 51 yards on five punts at Navy, with four downed inside the Mids' 20-yard line.

Lehigh will have its bye next weekend and will look to get back to .500 in games prior to the bye under Andy Coen. The Mountain Hawks have won their last three games leading into their bye week to get to 5-6 under Coen, topping Bucknell in 2015 and 2016 and Georgetown last year. Lehigh had week one off in 2007 and then played 11 straight weeks.

Penn opened its season with a 34-17 win over Patriot League member Bucknell Saturday at Franklin Field. The Quakers raced to a 17-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game and never looked back. Penn finished 6-4 in 2017 but has now won its last five games dating back to last season. The Quakers return seven All-Ivy honorees led by first team linebacker Nick Miller and first team kicker Jack Soslow. Miller is also a preseason All-American while Soslow was named Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week after kicking a pair of long field goals and going 4-for-4 on extra points against the Bison. Second team All-Ivy running back Karekin Brooks ran for 72 yards and two touchdowns against Bucknell. He finished with 268 yards and accounted for four touchdowns (three rushing and one passing) against Lehigh last season.

Saturday's game marks Andy Coen's fourth meeting with Penn as a head coach, after spending six seasons with the Quakers under Al Bagnoli prior to his return to Lehigh. Coen spent six seasons as Penn's offensive coordinator where he helped the Quakers to three Ivy League titles and a top ten national finish in 2003. While Coen led Penn's offense, Quaker head coach Ray Priore was Penn's defensive coordinator and secondary coach.

Lehigh and Penn meet for the 61st time with the Quakers holding a 45-15 advantage. The Mountain Hawks have faced the Quakers in each of the last three seasons after the programs had previously not met since 2003. Penn won last year's game after Lehigh posted wins in 2015 and 2016. Lehigh and Penn met regularly in the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s. Lehigh has won 13 of the last 18 meetings dating back to 1975. These teams first met in 1885.

Saturday's game kicks off just after 3 p.m. from Franklin Field in Philadelphia. The contest will air live on ESPN (subscription required) with audio coverage on Fox Sports Radio 1230 and 1320 and LVFoxSports.com beginning at 2 p.m.
