LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — Lehigh got yet another big defensive effort and a late second overtime goal from freshman Josh Luchini to defeat Rider on the road Tuesday night.
Â
Following an early shot from sophomore Trevor Koski, the Mountain Hawks had two headers hit the crossbar from seniors Oscar Greene and Mark Forrest that would have broken the game open in Lehigh's favor.
Â
Both teams applied pressure early in the match with the shot battle tied at four each. Both teams were aggressive, however, early in the first half as the Broncs accumulated nine fouls and the Mountain Hawks had seven through the first 45 minutes.
Â
Additionally, Rider's Sylvain Coco was ejected in the 25th minute, while Forrest was sent off following a second yellow in the 64th minute, forcing both teams down to 10 men.
The Mountain Hawks and the Broncs were held scoreless through 90 minutes before going another 10 minutes in the first overtime without scoring a goal.
Â
"It's hard to go on the road against good teams. We did what we had to do to find a win," said head coach Dean Koski. "We were really disappointed that we had to play a man down. Mark Forrest's red card really shot us in the foot, but I thought our defense did a great job. Tyler Dressman and (goalkeeper) Will Smith really carried our team defensively. And then it was a great goal by Josh (Luchini)."
Â
In the second overtime, at the 103:31 mark, Luchini's goal, assisted by Koski came about after going one-on-one with Rider goalkeeper Pablo Gatinois.
Â
Smith, the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, made four saves while facing 13 shots against yet another relentless offense en route to his third shutout of the season.
Â
Overall, the Broncs won the shot battle 13-7. Rider also had seven corner kicks to Lehigh's four.
Â
With a 3-3 overall record, including 3-1 on the road, the Mountain Hawks return home on Saturday searching for their elusive first home win of the season against Penn.
Â
"Now we just got to build some momentum against a really good Penn team," said Koski. "This is another opportunity to learn a little more about ourselves heading into the weekend. Now we just have to take the time to recover after this win and get ready for Saturday."
Â
Saturday's match kicks off at 6 p.m. on Saturday following the women's Patriot League opener against Army at 1 p.m. Both matches will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
