Lehigh Sitting in Fourth after Day One of Patriot League Championships

Day 1 Results

EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team opened up competition on Friday with day one of the Patriot League Championships at Lafayette. Junior Ryan Givens and sophomore Jeffrey Kirshenbaum both grabbed fourth place finishes on the day to lead Lehigh. Muti Trevor Knowles is in first place of the decathlon after the first five events on Friday. The Mountain Hawks find themselves sitting in fourth place after the first day with 19 points. Four-time defending champion Navy leads with 73 points, followed by Army West Point (65), Bucknell (41), Lehigh, and Lafayette (15).

The day got going in the 10K where Kirshenbaum (31:31.90) and Alexander Fitzgerald (31:46.42) finished just off the podium in fourth and fifth, respectively. Patrick Reilly (31:51.53) also netted team points with his seventh place finish.

"Those guys ran the fast section and ran really well," said head Coach Matt Utesch. "It was a great way for us to kick off the morning on a good note."

Givens set a new PR by three centimeters at 7.13 meters in the long jump, just missing the podium by three centimeters in fourth place. Michael Gooding was next for Lehigh after leaping 6.63m. While simultaneously competing the in the decathlon, Kyle Sult took time to compete in the open javelin, where he captured ninth place after throwing 58.20m.

"We knew he had it in him," Utesch said of Givens. "He's been around seven meters all year, so it was nice to see him let it go there on his last jump."

Lehigh had two multis competing in the decathlon, who completed five of their 10 events on Friday. Knowles, who is in search for his unprecedented fourth straight decathlon title and eighth multi title overall, will enter Saturday in first place with 3,542 points, 70 points ahead of second place. He set personal records in two of his events on Friday. He won the 100m dash in personal-record time at 11.26 seconds, then finished second in the long jump (6.70m), and followed by setting a 17-centimeter PR to win the shot put at 13.82m. He tied for fourth in the high jump at 1.80m and rounded out his day by taking sixth in the 400m (53.73).

Sult enters Saturday in sixth place with 3,061 points. He began his day by finishing second to Knowles in the 100m by PR-ing in 11.54 seconds. After finishing eighth (5.51m) in the long jump, he took home fourth in the shot put (10.70m). He then went on to win the high jump, setting a new PR by one centimeter (1.92m) and then placed eighth in the 400m.

The Mountain Hawks earned four team points courtesy of James Chappell, Clay Stabolepszy, Kyle Kirk and Matt Kravitz in the 4x800 meter relay after they combined for a 7:44.39 finish.

Over in the vault, Joey Kelly placed ninth after clearing 4.55m on his first bar, before attempting to advance to 1.70m.

Anastasios Mouzakis (44.94m) finished 13th in the hammer throw.

Samuel Tapera (10.95) and Matt Solomon (10.97) both hit new PRs in while finishing 14th and 15th in the 100m dash prelims, and Emre Soybas finished 14th in the 200m dash prelims (22.25).
