BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh football program closed out its spring practice segment with the annual Brown and White Spring Game on a sunny Saturday in Goodman Stadium. The 2018 edition of the annual spring-ending scrimmage featured a new format, with the Brown team (defense) being spotted a 23-0 lead at the start. The White team (offense) was afforded a number of drives to try and beat that score, but mustered three touchdowns over 12 series as the Brown squad held on for a 23-21 win.

All three Lehigh quarterbacks threw a touchdown pass in the game, while on the other side of the ball, the defense stopped the offense on nine possessions and came up with an interception, six pass breakups, one "sack," and three tackles for loss.

Saturday's scrimmage was contested with "thud" tackling so ball carriers were not brought to the ground.

"Our coaching staff has done a great job," Lehigh head coach Andy Coen said. "I was really thrilled with the thud tackling that we did today. We didn't bring guys to the ground but we had great tackling form. That really can hurt you when you don't tackle the right way. Last year we weren't good tacklers and that was largely because of our technique. That technique has really improved."

Senior quarterback Brad Mayes unofficially completed 13-of-23 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown. The top receiving target for Lehigh quarterbacks was senior Conner Bianchini, who hauled in six receptions for 52 yards. Senior Cam Richardson caught two passes for 51 yards with both receptions going for touchdowns.
Despite being without two projected senior starters, Lehigh's secondary played well. Junior Marquis Wilson was credited with a team-best seven stops. Junior Riley O'Neil had three stops and added a pass breakup and the Mountain Hawks' lone interception of the day. Sophomore Jaylen Floyd added a pair of pass breakups.

"We had a couple dropped interceptions that could have been touchdowns defensively," Coen said. "But that was good to see. We were close to creating a lot of turnovers, which is a good thing."

The scrimmage began with the defense forcing five consecutive punts and three drives by Mayes and two drives by junior Tyler Monaco.

Mayes finally got the offense going on its sixth series, moving the team 65 yards in eight plays, and utilizing All-America running back Dominick Bragalone out of the backfield. A 21-yard screen pass to Bragalone converted a 3rd-and-11 situation and Mayes capped the drive with a 19 yard swing pass to Bragalone for the offense's first score of the day. Bragalone rushed for just nine yards on six carries but finished with 40 receiving yards on those two grabs.

Sophomore Addison Shoup took over for series No. 7 and after a three-and-out regrouped to lead Lehigh on a 72 yard scoring drive. Senior Jake Buskirk delivered the longest rush of the day with a 28 yard burst up the middle of the field and on the next play, Shoup hit Richardson down the seam in the end zone for a 36 yard touchdown. Buskirk finished with 42 rushing yards on eight carries.

"The offense is still sound and good," Coen said. "The game was skewed a little bit because we weren't putting running backs on the ground. Dom can break so many tackles but couldn't really do that in this scrimmage. The offense performed well. The offensive line did a pretty good job. We protected the quarterback pretty well. I was pleased to see how well our quarterbacks did on the run, escaping pressure."

The Lehigh defense kept Mayes and then Monaco out of the end zone on the final two full-field series. Senior Mark Walker broke through for the only would-be sack of the day in series No. 9.

"Our linebackers have all gotten a lot better," Coen noted. "We can blitz better and do some things when we have linebackers that are very active like those guys are. I was excited to see our linebackers play today."

Following a break for field goal work, the scrimmage concluded with a pair of red zone series. Mayes started the first drive from the Brown 20 yard line but on the third play was intercepted by O'Neil to end the threat.

Monaco capped the scrimmage with a 15 yard touchdown pass to Richardson on a corner route on what ended up being the final play of the day.

Lehigh kickers converted all three of their in-game extra point attempts, with senior Ed Mish going 2-for-2 and junior Austin Henning going 1-for-1. Both kickers did well on their field goals, with those segments providing breaks throughout the game.

"It was very exciting to be back on the field at Goodman Stadium," Coen said. "Our kids had a really good spring practice segment. They worked very hard. The weather was awful but they did not complain. They just went about their business. What I was preaching to them was, 'just get better every day.' A lot of kids really did that, so I was really pleased."

Prior to the start of the Brown and White Game, sophomore defensive lineman Zac Troxell was awarded the Jim Gum Scholarship Award, which is presented in memory of former Lehigh football player James S. Gum '84. Troxell, a native of nearby Phillipsburg, N.J., was credited with one tackle Saturday and will vie for time in Lehigh's defensive line rotation in the fall.

The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up their spring segment with meetings and will then break for the summer before reconvening in August for the start of preseason camp. Lehigh will open the 2018 season at home against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday, September 1.
