BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh continues its nine-game road swing with a visit to Saint Joseph's Wednesday for a non-league doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 3 p.m. from SJU Softball Field.
The Mountain Hawks are looking to bounce back after a rare Patriot League series loss. Lehigh won Saturday's opening game at Boston University to extend their winning streak to five, but the Mountain Hawks were then swept in a Sunday doubleheader. It marked just the fourth time in the last 25 years that Lehigh was swept in a Patriot League regular season doubleheader and just the fourth time Lehigh lost a Patriot League series of three or more games.
The series loss at Boston University leaves Lehigh at 11-19 overall and 6-3 at the halfway point of Patriot League play. The Mountain Hawks will use Wednesday's twin bill to prepare for this weekend's key three game league series at Bucknell.
Sophomore Mary-Hannah Smith was Lehigh's top performer at the plate last week, going 7-for-15 with two home runs and six RBIs. Smith had three hits, a home run, and three RBIs in both Lehigh's win at Fordham last Wednesday and the opening game of the BU series. At one point, Smith hit safely in six straight at-bats spanning the two games. The recent hot streak upped Smith's season average to .313 and she leads the Mountain Hawks with 18 RBIs.
Senior Nicole Yozzo added five hits in last week's action and continues to lead the Mountain Hawks at a .337 clip for the season, while junior Ashley Rabago and freshman Allyson Dibsie each drove in three runs in the four games last week.
In the pitcher's circle, sophomore Parker Boyd went 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 21 innings last week but suffered her first league loss after five straight wins in Sunday's series finale in Boston.
Saint Joseph's enters Wednesday's doubleheader at 13-18 overall and 2-7 in the Atlantic 10. The Hawks were swept in a three-game series at Massachusetts. Molly Kapala is the only Hawk batting over .300 as she is hitting .326 with two home runs and 16 RBIs. Caela Abadie leads Saint Joseph's with five home runs and 19 RBIs.
Four Hawks have seen action in the circle. Madison Clarke leads the team with a 2.83 ERA while Ashley Ventura has thrown the most innings (96) and is 5-10 with 58 strikeouts and a 3.21 ERA.
Saint Joseph's leads the all-time series 23-17 but Lehigh swept a doubleheader last year at Leadership Park, winning 3-1 in nine innings and 2-1. Senior Carolyn Wright drove in four of Lehigh's five runs in last year's doubleheader, including a walk-off two-run home run in the ninth inning of game one.
Following the Saint Joseph's doubleheader, Lehigh will play three games at Bucknell with a doubleheader set for Saturday at noon and a single game Sunday at noon in Lewisburg, Pa.
