Mountain Hawks edged twice on final day of spring break trip

3/17/2018 8:44:00 PM | Softball

CLEARWATER, Fla. – A couple late inning rallies did in the Lehigh softball team on the final day of its spring break trip. A two-run single from senior Carolyn Wright pulled Lehigh even with LIU Brooklyn late, but when the Mountain Hawks took a pair of one-run leads in extra innings, the Blackbirds answered twice, winning Lehigh's first game of the day 8-7 in nine innings. Senior Nicole Yozzo's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth put Lehigh ahead of Florida Gulf Coast 2-1, but the Eagles scored three runs in the top of the seventh to grab a 4-2 victory, dropping the Mountain Hawks to 4-15 on the season.

Wright led Lehigh against LIU Brooklyn, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs. A third-inning RBI single by junior Ashley Rabago gave Lehigh a 2-1 lead before the Blackbirds capitalized on three bases loaded walks to take a 4-2 lead.

Trailing 5-2 in the fifth, sophomore Reva Alderman singled home pinch runner Katie Schultz to bring Lehigh within two runs. The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth and Wright delivered a two-run single to knot the score at 5-5.

The game remained tied into the eighth inning, where the international tiebreaker was implemented. A pinch-hit RBI ground out by sophomore Lexi van Ooyen gave Lehigh a 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth, but LIU Brooklyn pulled even in the bottom half, then loaded the bases with two outs before sophomore Parker Boyd came out of the bullpen to strand the winning runs.

Wright gave Lehigh a 7-6 lead with a ninth-inning RBI single, but Nereyda Gutierrez delivered a RBI single to tie the game. An error moved the winning run into scoring position before Ryleigh Bermea's RBI double brought home the winning run.

Junior Emily Sorem started for Lehigh and went the first 7.2 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits with six walks and three strikeouts. Boyd took the loss, allowing two runs in 0.2 innings of work.

LIU Brooklyn (10-17) had an 11-9 advantage in hits.  Erynn Sobieski earned the win for the Blackbirds with 3.1 innings of relief where she did not allow an earned run.

Lehigh's second game of the day, against FGCU was scoreless through three innings. A Bri Bennett sacrifice fly in the fourth inning opened the scoring, but Lehigh answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on a two-out RBI single by senior Rachel Timberman.

Rabago doubled to lead off the home sixth and Yozzo beat out an infield single to bring home Rabago with the go-ahead run.

Boyd got the first two outs in the top of the seventh with little issue but FGCU (23-5) rallied with three consecutive singles. Erica Ward had the third of those singles, which brought home the tying run. Ashley Biddle followed with a ground ball to short but an error at first base allowed the go-ahead run to score. Kate Kelly brought home an insurance run with a RBI single and Lehigh was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Boyd suffered her second loss of the day, allowing four runs (one earned) on eight hits, with three walks and seven strikeouts as she falls to 3-8.

Taylor Bauman earned the win in relief for the Eagles with two innings of scoreless pitching.

Both teams had eight hits, with Yozzo leading Lehigh going 2-for-3 and reaching base three times.

The Mountain Hawks are scheduled to open their home slate on Wednesday when they host Delaware in a doubleheader at Leadership Park. First pitch for game one is set for 2:30 p.m. Lehigh will open league play at home against Colgate with three games March 24-25.
