Lehigh travels to Colgate for Wednesday night showdown

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's basketball team looks to continue its recent success when it heads to Colgate on Wednesday to face the Raiders. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks are coming off an 80-78 overtime win at American Saturday, their second straight overtime victory and fourth straight win overall. Senior Kahron Ross stepped up on Saturday, scoring a career-high 30 points to earn Patriot League Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. Heading into Wednesday, Lehigh stands in fifth place in the standings, just one game behind third and two games behind Colgate in second.

Ross shot 13-of-21 from the field on Saturday, including 3-of-3 from three-point range. He became Lehigh's first guard to score 30 points since Mackey McKnight at Fordham on Nov. 15, 2013. He also became the first Lehigh guard to score 30 points and shoot better than 60 percent from the field since C.J. McCollum had 32 on 10-of-16 shooting at Liberty on Nov. 19, 2011. Ross scored eight of Lehigh's 12 overtime points, scoring 22 of his 30 points after halftime.

Junior Lance Tejada added 19 points, which included 3-of-7 shooting from three-point range. Sophomore Pat Andree had 13 points, seven rebounds and a career-high tying three assists while junior Kyle Leufroy was strong in tallying 11 points, eight boards, an assist and two steals. In the end, Ross became Lehigh's sixth different leading scorer in its last six games. The Mountain Hawks have shown an impressive balanced attack, with seven different players tallying 20 or more points on the year.

On Saturday, Lehigh trailed by nine midway through the first half, but the Mountain Hawks used an 11-0 run to retake the lead, on their way to a five-point halftime advantage. Lehigh's lead swelled to 10 following a Leufroy three-pointer with 11:29 left in the second half. However, American answered with a 17-2 run to take a 58-53 lead, but the Mountain Hawks later tallied an 8-0 run to help force overtime where Ross stepped up. Lehigh pulled out the victory despite missing freshman Marques Wilson due to illness, and sophomore Jordan Cohen's minutes being limited. The Mountain Hawks improved to 4-1 in overtime this season; it marks Lehigh's most overtime games and wins since 1986-87 when it also won four-of-five in the extra session.

As a team, Lehigh shot 48 percent from the field (31-of-64), including 50 percent from three-point range (11-of-22). It marked the Mountain Hawks' fifth straight game shooting 50 percent or more from long distance while they've had 10 or more makes in eight straight contests. Lehigh is now shooting 53.3 percent from three over its last five games (56-of-105) and 49.7 percent over its last eight (92-of-185). Lehigh's four-game winning streak is its longest since the end of last season when it won six in a row (final four regular-season contests and the first two Patriot League games). The Mountain Hawks are now 18-2 in the month of February dating back to the 2015-16 season.

The Mountain Hawks will look to avenge a 76-72 loss to Colgate on Jan. 17. The Raiders jumped out to a 50-22 lead, but from there, Lehigh outscored Colgate 50-24, pulling as close as two in the final minute, but it wasn't enough.

Colgate is coming off a heartbreaking defeat at Bucknell Monday night, falling victim to a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Kimbal Mackenzie. Despite the loss, the Raiders have still won six of their last eight games, beginning with their 76-72 win at Lehigh in January. Four Colgate players are averaging double-figure points, led by Will Rayman's team-leading 13.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Jordan Swopshire averages 12.4 points, Jordan Burns comes in at 12.3 and Sean O'Brien has scored 10.9 per contest. The Raiders are 9-2 at home this season, only falling to Lafayette and Bucknell. Colgate leads the Patriot League in fewest turnovers and turnover margin.

Lehigh went 3-0 against Colgate last season, including a 77-72 win in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. Prior to Lehigh's five-game winning streak vs. the Raiders, Colgate had won three in a row. Despite Lehigh's loss this season, the Mountain Hawks have still won 10 of the last 15 games against Colgate overall, also winning home Patriot League Quarterfinal games vs. the Raiders in 2012 and 2013. The first-ever meeting between the two sides was in 1909-10, a 25-24 Colgate win. Lehigh's first victory was in 1961-62 by a 72-71 final.
