Monday's win wrapped up a busy month of January which saw Lehigh play 10 games, its most games in a month since January of 1994 when it also played 10 contests. Sophomore Jordan Cohen helped wrap up January in style, finishing Monday with a season-high 19 points, 16 in the second half and 12 in Lehigh's 16-2 run to begin the second half. That run turned a 35-33 lead into a 51-35 advantage. The Mountain Hawks' advantage eventually reached 19 following a Pat Andree three and Lehigh led 64-46 following a Caleb Bennett three-pointer with 5:34 remaining. Holy Cross responded with a quick 19-3 run in just over four minutes to pull as close as two, but Lehigh made a key defensive stop and freshman James Karnik grabbed a tough rebound off a Caleb Green missed three-pointer, to help wrap up the victory. Cohen and junior Kyle Leufroy combined to go 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final seconds to seal the victory.
Along with Cohen's 19 points, senior Kahron Ross tallied 13, 11 coming in the first half. In the process, Ross moved from 23rd into a tie for 21st place in school history for career points (currently 1,231). He also went 2-of-4 from three-point range to eclipse 100 made treys in his career. Leufroy added 12 points, shooting 2-of-3 from three-point range. Andree and Bennett each scored eight points; Bennett was a perfect 2-for-2 from long distance. Lehigh picked up the victory, despite missing juniors Lance Tejada and Caleb Sedore with undisclosed injuries.
Defense helped spark the Mountain Hawks Monday, allowing just 46 points over the game's first 34:30, including just two over the first seven second-half minutes. Lehigh's swarming full-court ball pressure led to several steals and fast break opportunities. All seven Mountain Hawks who played recorded at least one steal as Lehigh recorded 10 steals for the game, reaching double digits for the fourth time this season and first time since Nov. 19 against Eastern University.
On the other end, Lehigh continued its stellar three-point shooting, finishing at 52 percent (11-of-21) from behind the arc. Through two games against Holy Cross, the Mountain Hawks are shooting 55 percent from distance (26-of-47); Lehigh was 15-of-26 in the first meeting vs. the Crusaders. Monday marked Lehigh's second straight game shooting 50+ percent from long distance after a 12-of-22 effort vs. Navy, marking the first time the Mountain Hawks eclipsed 50 percent from three in consecutive games since Dec. 30, 2015 vs. Army West Point (10-of-18) and Jan. 2, 2016 at Boston University (10-of-17).
Overall, Lehigh has double-digit made threes in five straight games, shooting 59-of-123 in that span (48 percent). It marks the first time in Brett Reed's tenure as head coach (11th season) that the Mountain Hawks have done so in five consecutive games; last year, Lehigh had double-digit threes in four straight games on two separate occasions. Lehigh's season percentage is up to 39.8 percent from distance, 44.8 percent in league play.
Boston University stands in second place in the league standings, owning a 12-10 overall record, including 8-3 mark in the Patriot League. The Terriers have won three of their last four, most recently earning a 64-55 home win over Loyola. Boston U has won three straight on the road, winning at Holy Cross (54-40), Navy (75-68) and Lafayette (75-72). The Terriers' leading scorer Cedric Hankerson has been dealing with an injury during Patriot League play as he's played in just seven of the first 11 league contests. He leads Boston University in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game. Max Mahoney comes in at 12.7, Tyler Scanlon averages 9.7 and Walter Whyte averages 8.5. The Terriers feature strong balance with six players averaging between 7.7 and 13.7 points. Boston University's 38.2 field-goal percentage is good for 57th nationally.
Boston University won the first meeting on Jan. 8, 92-81 to take a 7-4 lead in the all-time series. The Terriers have won four straight regular season meetings overall, but Lehigh picked up a big Patriot League semifinal victory in Boston last March. Lehigh's last regular season win vs. the Terriers came on Jan. 2, 2016, an 81-73 win in Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks also won the previous meeting in Stabler, winning 89-86 on Jan. 31, 2015. Overall, four of the last five meetings between the sides have come in Boston. Boston University won the first-ever meeting between the two sides in 1968-69 by an 81-56 final. It marked the only meeting between the two schools before the Patriot League era.
