BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off an impressive season-opening win at Monmouth, the Lehigh men's basketball team will face a tough challenge on Friday when it travels to Miami to face the Hurricanes in a homecoming game for senior Lance Tejada who is from nearby Miramar, Fla. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra. The Mountain Hawks defeated Monmouth on Tuesday, 85-61, in a game which saw junior Pat Andree break out for a career-high 31 points in a homecoming game and senior Kyle Leufroy eclipse 1,000 career points. In the end, Lehigh won its season opener for a second straight season for the first time since doing so in 1998 and 1999. The Mountain Hawks also won their ninth straight regular season game dating back to last season.
Â
The Mountain Hawks used an early 13-0 run to turn a 7-3 deficit into a 16-7 lead, with the last 11 points scored by Andree. A native of Colts Neck, N.J., approximately 15 minutes from Monmouth's campus, Andree had 17 points by halftime, finishing with 31 to eclipse his previous career high of 30 set his freshman year vs. Saint Francis (Pa.). Andree finished 9-of-15 from the field, including 6-of-10 from three-point range. It marked the most points by a Lehigh player since Marques Wilson had 28 at Colgate last February, and the first time a Mountain Hawk scored 30 points since Kahron Ross last January at American.
Â
Junior Jordan Cohen added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists while Leufroy finished with 11 and freshman Nic Lynch had 10 points in just nine minutes due to foul trouble. Leufroy netted his 1,000th career point late in the second half with a corner trey, becoming the 36th player in school history to reach the milestone. Lehigh dominated the boards, 47-28, led by nine from Leufroy, eight from Andree and six from Karnik. Five different Mountain Hawks had five or more rebounds.
Â
Tuesday marked head coach Brett Reed's 199th win of his career. Along with Lehigh's offensive prowess, the Mountain Hawks were strong defensively, holding Monmouth to just 33.9 percent shooting from the field, Lehigh's best mark since holding Army West Point to 29.3 percent shooting last February. That game was the only time Lehigh held an opponent to 33.9 percent or less shooting last season.
Â
Miami will mark the fifth different ACC team Lehigh faces since the 2011-12 season. The Mountain Hawks defeated Duke in the 2012 NCAA Tournament (75-70) then went on to face Pittsburgh in 2013-14, Syracuse and Virginia in 2015-16, and Virginia and Pittsburgh in 2017-18. Lehigh has historically enjoyed success against power conference schools. Within the past five years, the Mountain Hawks defeated DePaul and Arizona State in 2013 and Mississippi State in 2016. Lehigh also has several close losses against power conference foes.
Â
Lehigh will face three power conference opponents this season: Miami, Kansas State and West Virginia. Following Friday's game, the Mountain Hawks return home for their first two home games, hosting Marist on Tuesday (7 p.m.) and Princeton on Friday (8:30 p.m.).
Â
Picked 10th in the preseason ACC poll, Miami lost its first and third leading scorers from last season, but does return plenty of talent. Friday is the Hurricanes' season opener. Lonnie Walker led the Hurricanes in scoring last season (11.5) and was selected by the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Draft. Dewan Hernandez is the leading returning scorer (11.4) and rebounder (6.7) while Chris Lykes averaged 9.6 points and D.J. Vasiljevic averaged 9.0. Miami finished 22-10 last season, its fourth straight season with 20+ wins and third straight season in the NCAA Tournament. The Hurricanes lost to Loyola-Chicago 64-62 in the Round of 64 of last season's tournament.
Â
Miami leads the all-time series 6-1, which includes five straight wins. The teams have played fairly often, already playing three times since the turn of the century (2000, 2002 and 2006). Most recently, the Hurricanes picked up a 79-58 win on Dec. 9, 2006. Lehigh's lone win was on Dec. 27, 1989 via an 83-59 final. The teams first played during the 1970-71 season, which saw Miami win, 74-67.
Â
After Friday's game, Lehigh will return home next week for a pair of games in Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks will host Marist on Tuesday (7 p.m.) and Princeton on Friday (8:30 p.m.).
