BETHLEHEM, Pa. — With only seven games left to play in the regular season, the Mountain Hawks are doing a pretty great job right now of creating distance between them and the other teams in the Patriot League.
On Wednesday night, Lehigh walked away from the Ulrich Sports Complex with its first home victory of the 2018 season, a big 1-0 win over 20th-ranked Colgate. With the win, the Mountain Hawks improved to 3-0 in the Patriot League, currently entering play on Saturday with a 6-4-1 overall record.
The Mountain Hawks welcome the Midshipmen of Navy on Saturday evening at 6 p.m., riding momentum after their first home win on Wednesday had a lot more meaning than just another game on the calendar. The match is the first of Lehigh's two 'Summit Series' games, where tickets will be $5 at the gate.
Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week Mark Forrest scored Lehigh's lone goal in the 31st minute on Wednesday, thanks to a shot from freshman Josh Luchini that rebounded off the goalkeeper and right to Forrest for the tally. The goal was Forrest's fifth of the season, giving him 38 for his career, five away from tying the Lehigh and Patriot League all-time record currently held by Andrew Mittendorf (43).
The Mountain Hawks' defense, made up of senior Matt Morana, junior Zarin Tuten, junior Nolan Coulter, and freshman Dawson Berger, kept the Raiders off the scoreboard, while junior goalkeeper Will Smith did his job between the pipes, making two saves and decreasing his goals against average to 0.87. Smith recorded his Patriot League-leading sixth shutout.
The offense has been playing a lot better as a unit since playing Penn to a 0-0 draw back on Sept. 15. The Mountain Hawks have scored eight goals in their last four matches.
Along with Forrest, Luchini has really shined at the other forward position, making that pairing one of the most lethal combinations in the league right now. Luchini has notched four goals with two assists for a total of 10 points to begin his first year at Lehigh. Forrest and Luchini have combined for 28 of the Mountain Hawks' 54 shots on goal this year.
With a 3-0-0 record in the Patriot League with wins over Army, BU, and Colgate, the Mountain Hawks lead Bucknell by two points with only seven games to play before the Patriot League Tournament.
The Midshipmen come into the Ulrich Sports Complex currently on a five-game losing streak, but played a tightly contested matchup on Wednesday against American, falling 3-2 in Annapolis. Navy (1-8-1, 0-3-0 PL) opened Patriot League play with a 2-1 overtime loss to Holy Cross on Sept. 23 before returning home in a losing effort to Loyola 4-1 on Sept. 21.
Jacob Williams leads the Mids' offense with three goals and 28 shots, including eight shots on goal in 10 games this season. Diego Manrique has two goals so far, including four points and four shots on goal. Five Navy players have scored one goal each, and there's been a total of five assists this year, all credited to a different player. While Ian Bramblett got the start in net for Navy's first nine games of the season and accumulated a GAA of 1.72, Tyler Fahning got his first start at goalkeeper for the Midshipmen on Wednesday, allowing three Eagle goals on 13 shots faced.
Navy leads the all-time series over Lehigh with a 32-19-7 all-time record, with Lehigh taking the last matchup on Oct. 7, 2017, 1-0.
The match will also be streamed live on the Patriot League Network at 6 p.m.
