BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's golf team will close out its fall season this weekend when the Mountain Hawks host the two-day, 36-hole Lehigh Invitational beginning Friday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 5-4 win over rival Lafayette in the annual President's Cup matches and are preparing to wrap up a fall campaign that has seen them finish sixth (out of 13-team or larger fields) in all three fall tournaments.

Saucon Valley Country Club, founded in 1920, has grown from 18 holes and a clubhouse to become one of the largest private clubs in North America. It encompasses 800 acres and consists of four courses, including the Weyhill Course, Old Course, Grace Course and Short Course. The Grace Course opened with nine holes in the fall of 1953 with the second nine opened for play in 1958. Named for Eugene Gifford Grace (Lehigh Class of 1899), longtime president and chairman of Bethlehem Steel, the Grace Course measures 7,051 yards from the championship tees and features greens nearly twice the size of those on the Old Course but without the severe contours.

Lehigh's senior class helped the Mountain Hawks reclaim the Presidents' Cup as Lee Hammerschmidt, Max Redetzke and Eamon Marone accounted for 3.5 of Lehigh's five points against Lafayette on Tuesday. Juniors Ryan Kelly and Owen Quinn also contributed 1.5 points teaming to go 1-0-1 in doubles action.

Those five players will construct Lehigh's scoring team for the invitational, while freshman Michael Tanaka will compete as an individual.

In its most recent tournament action, Lehigh finished sixth out of 13 at the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse, with Quinn (fifth) and Kelly (T-10th) leading the way with top 10 finishes. Kelly also led Lehigh at the fall-opening Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational, while Quinn was the top finisher at Binghamton's Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational.

The Mountain Hawks won last year's Lehigh Invitational with a total score of 581 (295-286) and lost the 2016 title in a playoff. Billy Johns and Johnny Hsu tied for medalist honors last season with Hsu prevailing on a matching of cards tiebreaker.

In addition to Lehigh, the 13-team field includes Patriot League members Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Navy, plus Fairfield, Fordham, Hofstra, Iona, Monmouth, Siena and St. John's.

The Lehigh Invitational will tee off Friday at 10:30 a.m. with the first 18 holes from the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. The tournament will conclude on Saturday with the final 18 holes beginning at 8:30 a.m. Lehigh's five-player scoring team will be playing in the last five groups off of hole No. 10 on Friday, with the first tee time for the Mountain Hawks set for 10:30 a.m. The Mountain Hawks will play with Navy and St. John's.
