Mountain Hawks pick up exciting 2-1 win over Colgate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Lindsay Alvarez scored her second goal in as many Saturdays to break a 1-1 tie in the 63rd minute, helping the Lehigh field hockey team past Colgate, 2-1 on Saturday. Alvarez also assisted on the Mountain Hawks' first goal, scored by sophomore Lenke Havas in the 15th minute. The Raiders evened the score just before halftime, but Lehigh had an answer.
Â
"We've really focused on some of the small details going into this game," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We've had a lot of frustrating moments throughout the season where we've been trying to perform at a high level and we've had some setbacks and moments where we've had to adjust. The ability to stay focused throughout these tough weeks was able to lead us to today, when we were able to perform under pressure and were able to execute some of our plays we've been working on."
Â
Colgate tallied the game's first two shots, but the Mountain Hawks responded with the next five. Lehigh turned its second penalty corner into the game's first goal as Havas inserted to Alvarez, who passed back to Havas, who put home her fourth goal of the season at the 14:14 mark.
Â
Just over five minutes later, the Mountain Hawks had more quality chances, including a shot by freshman Mauri Ware that got behind Colgate goalkeeper Emma Goldberg, but Nicole Salamone made the defensive save.
Â
The Raiders turned the momentum into the game-tying goal at 31:30, and the teams went into halftime tied at one.
Â
Lehigh fired nine of the first 11 second-half shots, including a second defensive save by the Raiders in the 55th minute. However, noone could stop Alvarez's shot at the 62:27 mark when the Mountain Hawks took advantage of a quick transition following a Colgate penalty corner. Alvarez's initial shot was saved, but she put home the rebound past an aggressive Goldberg coming out of the cage.
Â
"Lindsay Alvarez had one of the best performances of her career, which as a senior, was nice to see," said Dallmeyer. "She's been working really hard and staying focused, getting extra reps in. I definitely think that helped her today to be confident when she was on the ball, earning more minutes as time went on."
Â
Colgate had two shots looking to pull even, one on goal, but Innarella stood tall, making her fourth save to help Lehigh preserve the victory. Along with her four stops, Innarella made a number of aggressive plays throughout the game breaking up hard-charging forwards.
Â
Final shots were 18-9 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 6-4 edge in penalty corners.
Â
Lehigh returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Rider on Senior Day. Gametime is set for 12 p.m. and the Mountain Hawks' senior class of Alvarez, Lauren Dice and Isabel McKeown will be recognized prior to the contest.
