HAMILTON, N.Y. – After seeing its 12-game winning streak come to an end in the completion of Saturday's suspended game, the Lehigh softball team's bats re-awakened in a 12-4 win over Colgate Sunday on the final day of the regular season at Eaton Street Field.
Junior Carolyn Wright went 2-for-4 with five RBIs in game two, highlighted by a first inning grand slam as Lehigh raced to a 6-0 lead and then capped the day with a six-run seventh inning.
Saturday's second game was suspended with Colgate up 2-0 in the bottom of the second. Upon resuming, the Raiders added three more runs in the second and went on to take the game 8-0 in five innings.
Lehigh enters the Patriot League Tournament at 32-17 overall and 16-2 in the Patriot League. Colgate wraps up its season at 13-30-1 overall and 3-5 in the league.
Three of the first four batters for Lehigh reached in the top of the first inning of game two, leading up to Wright's third home run of the season, a grand slam to left. It marked the Mountain Hawks' fourth grand slam of the season.
Lehigh added single runs in the second and third innings on a sacrifice fly by senior Ashley Cole and then a pair of errors on a double steal that allowed sophomore Ashley Quidolit Rabago to score.
Colgate battled back behind a Virginia Irby RBI double in the third and then a Holly Geranen solo home run in the fourth. Jordan Miller's two-run home run, her third of the series, brought the Raiders within 6-4 after six but Lehigh put the game away by scoring six runs in the top of the seventh.
Wright came up again with the bases loaded and singled home Cole. Freshman Reva Alderman later added a three-run bases-clearing double, while Cole capped the frame with a two-run double.
Freshman Parker Boyd started for Lehigh in the circle and earned just her third win of the season, allowing four runs on four hits in a complete-game effort. Boyd walked two and struck out eight to improve to 3-5.
Wright, Cole and junior Katie Schultz combined for six of Lehigh's 12 hits.
Action resumed Sunday morning with Colgate leading 2-0 in the second with the bases loaded. Irby drew a bases-loaded walk and then Lauren La Terra singled home two more runs to give the Raiders a 5-0 lead before senior Christine Campbell could end the inning.
Colgate added a Pami White RBI single in the third and a two-run homer by Geranen in the fourth, while Kyle Griswold and Jessica Hay limited Lehigh to just three hits.
The Mountain Hawks put the first two batters on in the first inning before Saturday's rains came and then loaded the bases in the third inning on Sunday but could not cut into the deficit. Cole had two of Lehigh's three hits, while senior Vicky Lattanzio had the other.
Campbell was tagged for eight runs on seven hits in four innings with five walks and four strikeouts as she fell to 18-5 and suffered her first loss since March 18. She had won 13 straight decisions.
The Mountain Hawks will host the Patriot League Tournament, beginning Thursday at Leadership Park and will take on Holy Cross in the tournament's opening game at noon. The other first round contest will match No. 2 Boston University and No. 3 Army West Point.
