LEXINGTON, Ky. – Seniors Courtney Avery and Lucas Warning have punched their tickets to the finals of the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon after qualifying on Friday afternoon in the First Round prelims. Both are among the 12 East Region representatives in their events who will now join up with the top 12 finishers from the West Regional to compete for a national championship at the University of Oregon on June 7-10.
Â
Avery, a reigning Second Team All-American, is heading back to Eugene for the second straight year after she placed fifth on Friday in the high jump, tying her own school record at 1.82 meters. She was one of six athletes to clear the 1.82m mark. The mark sits two centimeters higher than her mark from last year's First Round and four centimeters higher than her 11th place height from last year's finals.
Â
"She cleared same bars as this year's indoor national champion," said head coach Matt Utesch. "She came out clean on her first two attempts and we thought it may end at the third bar (1.78m), but it ended up going up to 1.82m and she made it with a lot of room to spare."
Â
Making his second straight appearance in the East Region prelims, Warning qualifies for the finals of the NCAA Championships for the first time after posting the second longest shot put in program history at 18.82 meters. He hit the mark on his very first throw, which placed him ninth overall. He is the only athlete out of the 12 East Region qualifiers who is not from a Power Five conference institution.
Â
"He came out in the very first throw and threw a bomb to put himself in a great position," Utesch said. "He didn't sit back at all for the rest of his throws, but it put himself in a position where everyone else was chasing him. He executed beautifully."
Â
Maura Henderson also competed in the prelims of the 3,000m steeplechase on Friday evening. Henderson capped her strong sophomore season by racing to a 24th place finish of 10:27.57. She won a pair of league championships earlier this month in the 5K and steeplechase.
Â
"Maura Henderson is the future of our program," Utesch said. "She's going to come back to this meet and shine in the future. There is so much room for her to get better and hasn't tapped her potential. She's going to be as good as any distance runner we've ever had, if not the best."
Â
Warning will compete once again on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the discus to wrap up Lehigh's first round competition.
