Mountain Hawks split Wednesday doubleheader with Fordham

4/12/2017 8:10:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team closed out its seven game home stand by splitting a doubleheader with Fordham in a battle of the Patriot League and Atlantic 10 leaders Wednesday at Leadership Park. The Mountain Hawks claimed game one 4-1 to improve to 9-0 at home and run their winning streak to six straight, but the Rams got a strong pitching performance from Madison Aughinbaugh to claim the nightcap 6-1.

With the split, Lehigh heads into the fourth weekend of Patriot League play at 19-16.

In game one, senior Christine Campbell turned in a strong performance in the pitcher's circle, navigating through a potent Ram lineup to allow just one run on five hits in a complete-game effort. Fordham had base runners in every inning but Campbell limited the visitors to just the one run while striking out five and walking four to improve to 11-4 on the season.

"Christine Campbell pitched great in the first game," Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan said. "Her changeup was spot on and she certainly kept them off balance. They're a tremendous hitting team so she did a great job there."

The Mountain Hawks went in front in the bottom of the first as junior Nicole Yozzo and senior Ashley Cole reached on back-to-back infield singles. After a failed sacrifice attempt, senior Vicky Lattanzio lifted a fly ball to left that Maria Trivelpiece was unable to catch and Yozzo came around to score on the error.

Lehigh doubled its lead in the third as freshman Mary-Hannah Smith led off with a single and then Lattanzio doubled to left center, putting runners at second and third. A RBI ground out by sophomore Ashley Quidolot Rabago scored Smith to give Lehigh a 2-0 edge after three.

Cole delivered the biggest hit of the day for the Mountain Hawks, a two-out, two-run double to right center in the fourth that gave Lehigh a 4-0 lead.

"AC came up with a big hit there," Troyan said. "Against a team like Fordham that can score multiple runs, we knew those runs were big and were very happy (Ashley) was able to knock those two runs in."

Fordham cut into Lehigh's lead when Lindsay Mayer led off the sixth with a single and came around to score on a double by Madison Shaw, but Campbell responded with back-to-back strikeouts and then a ground out to limit the damage to just one run.

Lehigh finished with eight hits in the opener, with Yozzo and Cole recording two apiece.

Freshman Lauren Quense took the loss for Fordham, allowing four runs (three earned) in four innings.

Fordham (31-10) jumped on sophomore Emily Sorem early in game two as Sydney Canessa's double plated Jessica Hughes just two batters into the game. Following a walk and a pair of fielder's choices Skylar Johnston's bloop RBI single gave the Rams a 2-0 lead before Lehigh came to bat.

Mayer and Shaw teamed up to extend Fordham's lead in the third as Mayer led off with a single and then Shaw drilled a triple into the right field corner. Sorem escaped any further damage but the Rams led 3-0.

Aughinbaugh kept Lehigh at bay for most of game two, retiring the first 16 Mountain Hawks she faced. Lehigh picked up its first base runner in the sixth when junior Carolyn Wright reached on a Shaw error. Freshman Emily Preble re-entered to run and moved to third as junior Rachel Timberman delivered Lehigh's first hit, a double to left field. Junior Cassie Lajeunesse then delivered a sacrifice fly to put Lehigh on the board, but with Cole representing the tying run, Aughinbaugh induced a ground out to shortstop.

Fordham picked up some insurance in the seventh inning with three runs on four hits and a walk, capped by a Lauren Quence two-out, two-run single.

Freshman Lexi van Ooyen singled to lead off the home seventh for Lehigh's second hit but the Mountain Hawks could do no further damage.

"We were right in it," Troyan said. "The fact of the matter is against a good team you want to have a chance and we had a chance until they scored those runs in the seventh inning."

Aughinbaugh finished with a line of one unearned run allowed on two hits. She struck out four and issued zero walks.

Sorem took her first loss in nearly a month as she allowed three runs on six hits in four innings. She falls to 7-7 on the season. Freshman Parker Boyd offered two strong innings of relief before giving up the three runs in the seventh.

"Their pitcher in game two did a great job," Troyan said. "I felt like we may have been a little satisfied from game one. I don't know if we brought the same energy that we did in game one. There's a reason why their RPI is so good and why they're the top team in the Atlantic 10, because we took game one and they came back and played hard and took it to us in game two."

The Mountain Hawks will resume Patriot League play with three games at Holy Cross this weekend. Lehigh and Holy Cross will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game Sunday at Freshmen Field in Worcester, Mass., with first pitch both days set for noon.
