PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Mountain Hawks closed out its stint at the 2017 Snowbird Baseball Classic on Tuesday with a 7-3 loss to defending Big Ten Champion Ohio State at North Charlotte Regional Park Field 6.
The two sides played a closely-contested ball game, but the middle relief pitching by Ohio State (7-8) managed to quiet the Lehigh (2-9) bats and ultimately clinch the win for the Buckeyes. OSU's Austin Woodby earned the victory as he entered in the fourth inning and combined with Joe Stoll for the middle relief duties to hold the Mountain Hawks to just three hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Lehigh kept the deficit manageable as the Buckeyes never scored more than two runs in a given inning, but the lack of offensive production in the middle to late innings ultimately doomed the chances of a Lehigh comeback. The Mountain Hawks left eight runners stranded throughout the game and put just three runners in scoring position from the fifth inning on.
Catcher Jeff Shanfeldt had the only multi-hit performance for Lehigh on the day as he went 2-for-4 to earn his fourth multi-hit game of the season. Designated hitter John Scarr posted a team-leading two RBI on the day as he went 1-for-3 with a double.
Jacen Nalesnik extends his team-leading hit streak to six games as he went 1-for-5 on the day with a double. Anthony Rinaldi posted his 15th hit in the last eight games as he finished 1-for-4.
Cole McManimon entered in the sixth inning for just second appearance this season and threw the final three innings as he allowed one run, earned, on two hits with one walk and a team-high four strikeouts.
The Mountain Hawks will finish out their Florida trip on Wednesday with a matchup against North Dakota State starting at 11 a.m. in Babson Park, Fla.
