
Lehigh Men Drop West Coast Opener at Azusa Pacific

AZUSA, Calif. – The Mountain Hawks began their west coast swing Monday afternoon with a 7-2 loss at Azusa Pacific. The Cougars, ranked No. 13 in Division II, improve to 10-2 on the season while the Mountain Hawks fall to 2-7.
George Cooper and Graham Lehman paired up for the first time this season and competed a No. 1 doubles where they earned an 8-5 victory over Christian Schmid and Pascal Engel. Jack Martin-Dyer made his doubles debut as he teamed up with Jack Petersen at flight No. 2 and clinched the doubles point for Lehigh with a 9-8(10-8) victory over Marnix Pluim and Antonio Pejic.
After conceding the doubles point to Lehigh, the Cougars went a tear in the singles competition and recorded victories at all six flights.
No. 30 Schmid kicked things off with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles over Cooper. Azusa's other ranked man, No. 44 Engel, was leading 3-1 in the third set before earning the victory on a retirement by Petersen.
Martin-Dyer also retired at the third flight with the scored tied, 2-2, in the third set. The Cougars claimed two-set victories at the fourth, fifth and sixth flights in route to a singles sweep.
Lehigh continues its California spring break tour with a matchup at No. 14 Southern California on Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET.
