BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team will play its final home game of the season at Stabler Arena on Wednesday night when they host Colgate at 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks have clinched the ninth seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament and will play in the first round on Saturday night at eighth seeded Loyola. The entire Patriot League Tournament field is set heading into the final day of the regular season with all teams locked into their current seeding. The winner of the Lehigh-Loyola game will travel to top seeded Bucknell on Monday night at 6 p.m. for the quarterfinals. Colgate has clinched a first round bye to the quarterfinals, where they will play at Army West Point on Monday.
Lehigh students and fans can check into the game through the Mountain Hawk Rewards App for a chance to play a knockout game at halftime, with the winner attempting a half-court shot for $500.
This will mark the second time in one week that Lehigh has clashed with Colgate. The Raiders jumped out to a quick 22-2 lead over the first seven minutes of last Wednesday's matchup in Hamilton, before Lehigh ended the first quarter on a 10-1 run and outscored Colgate 68-53 over the final 33 minutes of play, but ultimately fell short by a score of 75-70. Junior Quinci Mann led the Mountain Hawks with 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting and 5-of-9 from three-point range. Sophomore Hailey Pascoe scored 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting and 4-of-6 from three-point range, and junior Mae Williams scored a career-high 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting and tied for a team-leading six rebounds. Freshmen Gena Grundhoffer and Camryn Buhr had nine points apiece and combined for 11 rebounds, and freshman Cameryn Benz scored five points. Colgate's Kateri Stone scored 20 of her game-high 29 points in the first half, and finished the game 8-of-12 overall and 6-for-7 from beyond the arc.
IF LEHIGH BEATS COLGATE
- Lehigh would earn at least a split of the season series with the Raiders going back through the 2005-06 season.
- Lehigh improve to 5-1 against Colgate over its last six games at Stabler Arena.
ALL-TIME VS. COLGATE
Lehigh and Colgate will square off for the 64th time overall and the second time in a week on Wednesday night. The Mountain Hawks hold a 6-4 record over the last 10 matchups dating back through the 2012-13 season. Over that span, Lehigh is 2-3 on the road at Cotterell Court and 4-1 at Stabler Arena. The two teams have split the regular season series each of the last three years, and Colgate has not won the season series (including PLT matchups) since taking two of three in the 2004-05 season.
Colgate has won the last two matchups in the series, most recently holding on for a five-point win last Wednesday in Hamilton. After trailing by 20, LU rallied to take a three-point lead late in the third quarter before Colgate outscored Lehigh 18-15 in the fourth.
The two teams split last season's series, with each team winning on their home court. Lehigh won 83-74 at Stabler on Feb. 24 as four players scored in double figures, led by Lexi Martins and Quinci Mann with 19 points apiece. Bernadette Devaney added 12 points as LU shot 44.4 percent from the field.
Lehigh won the first ever matchup between the two schools in 1986-87 by a score of 82-65. Colgate held a five game winning streak over Lehigh from 1993-1995, and the Mountain Hawks hold the longest winning streak in the series of 13 games from 2006-2012, the last of which was the only overtime game in the series history, where Lehigh prevailed 85-82 in 2OT.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
At 10-18 overall and 7-10 in Patriot League play, Colgate has locked itself into the No. 6 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament and will play at Army West Point in the quarterfinal round on Monday.
The Raiders rank tied for third in the league in scoring at 66.5 ppg, one spot ahead of Lehigh (63.0 ppg). The two teams rank seventh and eighth in the league in scoring margin, with Colgate holding a slight edge at -5.1. Colgate ranks second in free throw pct. (72.3), just ahead of fourth place Lehigh (71.5), and the Raiders rank second in the league by shooting 34.3 percent from three-point range.
Colgate holds their opponents to just under 39.3 percent shooting, ranking sixth in the league. Colgate is also right in the middle of the league in rebounding margin (-2.2.), while Lehigh sits eighth at -3.4.
On the defensive side of things, Colgate has come up with a league best 4.1 blocks per game, and ranks eighth with 6.3 steals.
The Raiders currently sit eighth in the PL with a -2.6 turnover margin, committing 17.5 turnovers per game, but have improved their numbers of late, allowing no more than 13 turnovers in five of their last seven games, including a season-low of 10 their win over Loyola on Feb. 18.
Senior Katie Curtis leads the team and ranks 11th in the PL with 12.7 ppg while collecting 4.3 rebounds and a team-high 2.8 assists per contest. Kateri Stone scores 12.1 ppg while sophomore Mylah Chandler leads the squad with 6.2 rebounds and has a team-leading 21 blocks.
Freshman Rachel Thompson has had an immediate impact on the team this season, scoring 9.6 ppg and shooting a team-best 47.7 percent from the field. Curtis (41.3 percent) and Stone (36.5 percent) are the team's biggest threats from the outside, along with Mackenzie Carroll (32.4) and Chelsea Koren (32.3).
TURNING THE CORNER ON THE ROAD?
In their last two road games, the Mountain Hawks have set season-highs in road field goal percentage, shooting 39.1 percent overall at Colgate last Wednesday, and then surpassing that with a 43.5 percent effort at Army on Saturday. Despite the shooting, Lehigh lost both games. LU has struggled on the road overall this year, going just 2-11 while shooting 33.2 percent from the field, including 27.2 percent from three-point range.
NOT ENOUGH THIS TIME
Lehigh's loss on Feb. 25 at Colgate was just the second this season when scoring at least 70 points, with the other coming in the Patriot League opener against Army on Dec. 30. Lehigh holds a 6-2 record in games this year where they have scored at least 70 points, and are 3-17 when scoring under 70, including a 1-8 mark when scoring in the 50's. Lehigh is averaging 76.2 points in their wins and 56.7 in their losses.
TIED THE HIGH
Lehigh's 12 made three-pointers at Colgate on Feb. 25 tied their season-high, which they previously set on Nov. 30 vs. NJIT. The Mountain Hawks have now hit 10 three-pointers on five different occasions this season.
QUINCI'S CONTINUES TO SCORE
Junior Quinci Mann scored a team-high 23 points at Colgate on Feb. 25, marking the 11th time this season she has scored at least 20 points, and the fifth time she has registered at least 23 in a game. She tied her career-high with five made three-pointers, the second time she has registered that many in one game (12/6/15 at Illinois).
MAE DAY
Junior Mae Williams scored a career-high 10 points in the Feb. 25 game at Colgate, while also setting a career-high with seven field goal attempts. She is averaging 4.2 rebounds and is shooting 46.7 percent from the field over her last six games.
GRUNDHOFFER MAKING STRIDES
Freshman Gena Grundhoffer has been a force for the Mountain Hawks over the last seven games, scoring 11.9 points per contest and shooting 46.0 percent from the field. She is also 6-for-11 from beyond the arc and is collecting 4.3 rebounds per game in the last seven games. She had the first 20-point game of her career on Feb. 11 against Holy Cross.
BUHR CONTINUES TO BLOOM
Over the last 12 games, freshman Camryn Buhr leads the Mountain Hawks with 5.3 rebounds and is third with 8.7 points per game. She is shooting 40 percent from the field during that span while leading the team with 12 steals and seven blocks, and is second with 13 assists. For the season, she has crept up to second on the team with 4.4 boards per game.
HEDSTROM'S HELPING HANDS
Over the last 11 games, freshman point guard Hannah Hedstrom ranks second on the team with 5.0 rebounds and is dishing out 3.8 assists per game.
Hedstrom is currently fourth in the Patriot League by averaging 3.5 assists per game, and is third during league games with 3.8 assists per game. She is the only freshman ranked in the top 10 overall and is tied for the most assists in one game this season: nine against Delaware State on Nov. 16.
MANN REMAINS IN THE TOP 25
Junior Quinci Mann ranks 28th in the NCAA in free throw percentage at 86.1 percent, after climbing as high as No. 19 last week.
Mann set a new program record for made free throws in a game by going 16-for-16 from the line on Feb. 1 against Loyola, surpassing the previous Lehigh record of 13, held by Alexa Williams (2009) and Kelly Madden (1995). The mark was 10 shy of the Patriot League record of 26 (in 26 attempts) held by Army's Kelsey Minato (2014).
Her 16 made free throws is the second most in a single game in the Patriot League this season, and tied for ninth most in a single game in the nation.
BATTLE ON THE BOARDS
After getting outrebounded in nine straight games from Dec. 5-Jan. 14 with a rebounding margin of -8.7, the Mountain Hawks went on a run of outrebounding their opponents in four of five games with a rebounding margin of 4.8 over that span. However, over the last two games against Colgate and Army, Lehigh has been outrebounded by an average of 12.0 rebounds per game.
Lehigh ranks fifth in the Patriot League by collecting 37.1 rebounds per game, but comes in eighth/10 by allowing 40.4 boards per game. Overall, Lehigh's rebounding margin sits at -3.4 and is 8th in the PL. Lehigh has been outrebounded in 17 of its 28 games this season and holds a 2-15 record in those games.
