BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Winners of three straight, the Lehigh men's basketball team will look to wrap up the regular season on a high note when it hosts Army West Point on Saturday evening. Opening tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Stabler Arena. Saturday will be Senior Night as Tim Kempton and Austin Price will be recognized prior to their final regular season home games. The Mountain Hawks will be home at least one more time after Saturday, as they've clinched a Patriot League Quarterfinal home game next Thursday night.
Â
Tickets for Wednesday's game are free with a Lehigh ID and as low as $5 for the general public. Youngsters can get in for just $4 by wearing their youth basketball jerseys. Lehigh students can take the Goodman Bus Service to the game; buses leave at 6:45 and 7:15 p.m. from the Dialogue Center on Taylor Street (between Taylor Gym and Grace Hall).
Â
Lehigh currently stands in a tie for second place in the standings (with Boston University). With a win over the Black Knights Saturday and a Boston University loss at Holy Cross, the Mountain Hawks would earn the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament. A win and a BU victory would mean Lehigh is the third seed. With a loss and certain out-of-town results, Lehigh could fall as low as fourth place. Regardless of Saturday's results, the Mountain Hawks will host a Patriot League Quarterfinal game for the seventh time in the last eight years.
Â
Both Lehigh and Army come into Saturday's game on a three-game winning streak. The Black Knights' three straight wins have all come against teams currently in the top half of the standings. Army won at Holy Cross (52-47), at Navy (71-68) and home vs. Boston University (73-62). In each of their last two games, Army has come back from double-digit deficits to come out victorious.
Â
Lehigh has won three straight games by an average of 21.0 points, defeating Navy (74-55), Lafayette (81-55) and most recently, Colgate (87-69). On Wednesday, the Mountain Hawks broke a 31-31 tie with a 20-2 run to end the first half, eventually opening as much as a 27-point second-half advantage and cruising to their 10th home win of the season (compared to just two losses). Sophomore Kyle Leufroy played a big role in the 20-2 run, beginning it with a three-pointer and ending it with five straight points (another three and a fastbreak dunk). Leufroy ended the game with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-8 from three-point range. The five made treys marked a career high. For a second straight game, Lehigh as a team tied a season high with 12 made threes.
Â
Kempton scored a team-leading 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double in the last six games, 17th of the season and 50th of his career. Kempton was also 7-of-11 from the field while doubling his previous career high for steals. His previous high was three, but he had six on Wednesday. The six steals were most by any Lehigh player since C.J. McCollum had seven on Feb. 29, 2012 in the Patriot League Quarterfinals, also vs. Colgate.
Â
Price added 16 points, which included 3-of-6 shooting from three-point range; he has now hit 50 percent (17-of-34) of his threes over his last five games. Meanwhile, junior Kahron Ross had 12 points and four assists, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor. Senior Devon Carter played strong minutes off the bench, which included a career-high three steals. Lehigh finished with 10 steals, its second straight game in double figures. Prior to Sunday's game at Lafayette (11 steals), the Mountain Hawks had reached double digits steals only twice this season - at Xavier in the season opener and at Army West Point in the Patriot League opener - when they had 10 steals in each game. The Lehigh defense has now allowed just 61.1 points per game in February and its field goal percentage defense (.434) is up to second in the Patriot League for the season.
Â
Army is locked into the No. 8 seed and will host ninth-seeded Lafayette or American in the Patriot League opening round on Tuesday. The league's reigning Player of the Week Jordan Fox leads the team in scoring, averaging 12.3 points and 4.8 assists per game. Four others average between nine and 10 points: John Emezie (9.6), Matt Wilson (9.4), Tommy Funk (9.2) and Luke Morrison (9.1). Army plays an up-and-down style, standing third in the league in scoring (73.1), but ninth in scoring defense (73.1).
Â
Lehigh beat Army West Point in the Patriot League opener, 66-59 to move within 63-41 of the Black Knights in the all-time series. The win was Lehigh's fourth in its last five games against Army. Overall, the Mountain Hawks have won eight of their last 11 in the series. The last time the teams met at Lehigh, the Black Knights won the 2015-16 Patriot League opener, 88-82. The first meeting between the two sides came in 1906-07, a 26-24 Lehigh victory. Army won the next matchup in 1914-15 by a 19-6 final.
Â
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks will open the Patriot League Quarterfinals at home next Thursday (Mar. 2). Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Stabler Arena.
