Yale jumped out to a 31-12 lead with 8:25 remaining in the first half, but the Mountain Hawks responded by scoring 30 of the final 39 first-half points. Included was a run of 30-6 (and 28-4). Senior Kahron Ross scored seven of his 10 first-half points in that stretch while sophomore Pat Andree knocked down a pair of big three-pointers. One pulled Lehigh within 37-33 with 2:57 left in the first while just over 90 seconds later, another trey gave the Mountain Hawks their first lead at 38-37.
Andree continued with his third trey to open the second-half scoring as Lehigh's lead eventually reached seven, but a 9-0 Yale run gave the Bulldogs a 51-49 lead. The teams went back-and-forth from there, but Yale ended the game on an 11-2 run to down the Mountain Hawks for a third straight season, including the last two seasons which came down to the final minutes.
Ross led the Mountain Hawks with 19 points and five assists, giving him 577 career assists, within one of Mackey McKnight's Lehigh career record. Ross also moved past Hank Wisniewski '73 into 27th place in school history for career points (currently 1,092). Freshman James Karnik and sophomore Jordan Cohen each had 14 points while Andree and junior Kyle Leufroy scored nine. Sophomore Ed Porter had four points and a career-high tying six rebounds while Karnik added a career-high three steals.
Mount St. Mary's marks Lehigh's fourth opponent coming off a 2017 NCAA Tournament berth. Last year, the Mountaineers won the NEC then defeated New Orleans 67-66 in an NCAA First Round game in Dayton before falling to Villanova. So far this season, the Mountain Hawks are 1-2 vs. reigning NCAA Tournament teams, falling at USC and Virginia while winning at Princeton. Should the Mountain Hawks win on Saturday, they would enter final exams break at 5-5 for the second straight season. Last season, Lehigh won at Mount St. Mary's 90-71 then beat Saint Francis (Pa.) 100-67 to enter finals break on a high note.
Last season, Mount St. Mary's began the year 1-11 against a challenging schedule, but responded by going 14-4 in NEC play to win the regular season and tournament titles. Mount St. Mary's graduated two of its top three scorers, but returns Junior Robinson, who averaged 14.2 points last season and is averaging 22.7 points so far this year. Jonah Antonio comes in at 13.6 points per game while Greg Alexander is averaging 11.0 off the bench. Robinson leads the team in assists with 48 while Donald Carey isn't far behind with 45 helpers. Mount St. Mary's plays an up-tempo style, averaging 73.6 points per game while allowing 83.7 and allowing opponents to shoot 50.8 percent from the field. The Mountaineers are 2-1 at home this season, but 0-5 on the road.
Saturday will be the third-ever meeting between Lehigh and Mount St. Mary's and third contest in as many seasons. The Mountain Hawks won the first-ever meeting in 2015, a game which saw Austin Price knock down a go-ahead three-pointer in the final minute. Lehigh then won at Mount St. Mary's last season, 90-71 led by 31 points and 18 rebounds from Tim Kempton.
Following final exams, the Mountain Hawks will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 21 when they travel to Saint Francis (Pa.) to face the Red Flash. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
