BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh junior Gordon Wolf has been added to the card for the 52nd NWCA All-Star Classic, hosted by Wrestlers in Business Network and sponsored by Princeton Brain and Spine and Northwestern Mutual Life, set for Sunday at Princeton's Jadwin Gym. Wolf will wrestle Penn's May Bethea in one of two showcase bouts, prior to the start of the main card. He joins senior Darian Cruz, who will wrestle Nick Piccininni of Oklahoma State at 125 pounds, in representing the Brown and White in New Jersey.
Wolf and Bethea both have ties to the Princeton Wrestling Club. Wolf grew up in nearby Lawrenceville, N.J. and he and Bethea wrestled for the club during their youth years. Throughout the history of the All-Star Classic, showcase matches have been held prior to the main card, often highlighting local and regional talent.
Last season, Wolf battled through injuries to post a 9-4 record at 165. He then went on to win a silver medal in freestyle at the Maccabiah Games last summer in Israel. Wolf qualified for the NCAA Championships as a freshman in 2016, going 1-2 with a first round upset of Iowa's Alex Meyer at 174 in his NCAA appearance.
Bethea is a two-time NCAA qualifier for Penn and reached the All-America round of 12 at last year's NCAA championships, competing at 157. Sunday's, the first between Wolf and Bethea in college, bout will be contested at 165.
Last month it was announced that Cruz, the reigning NCAA Champion at 125, would take on Piccininni in the All-Star Classic. Cruz is a two-time All-American with a 90-18 career record, who has won 21 straight bouts heading into Sunday's exhibition. Piccininni went 27-8 as a redshirt freshman for the Cowboys and finished fourth at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis. Sunday's meeting will be the first between Cruz and Piccininni.
Lehigh wrestlers own a 17-15 career record at the All-Star Classic. Mike Caruso was the first Lehigh wrestler to compete in the classic, defeating Jim Hanson of Colorado 6-3 in 1967.
The 52nd NWCA All-Star Classic, hosted by Wrestlers in Business Network and sponsored by Princeton Brain and Spine and Northwestern Mutual Life, is set for 3 p.m. on Sunday November 5 at Princeton's Jadwin Gym. For more information, including ticket information, visit goallstarclassic.com. A video stream of the classic will be available, for a fee, through Trackwrestling.com.
While Cruz and Wolf ready for the All-Star Classic, a number of Lehigh wrestlers, mainly reserves and candidates for deferred eligibility, will open their seasons on the open tournament circuit, with the Tiger Open, set for Saturday at Princeton.
The Mountain Hawks will open the dual meet season at Bucknell on Friday, November 10.
