BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off consecutive home victories, the Lehigh men's basketball team will begin a four-game road swing on Wednesday when it plays at No. 10 USC. Opening tipoff in Los Angeles is set for 10 p.m. ET on the Pac-12 Networks. The Mountain Hawks are 3-1 after four games for the first time since 2008-09. Lehigh has scored 342 points this season, most for the program through the first four games since 1991-92 (when it had 368). Wednesday's game will be a homecoming for a pair of Southern California natives: junior Kyle Leufroy (Pasadena) and sophomore Jordan Cohen (Tarzana).
Â
Wednesday will also begin a challenging road stretch, continuing with games at Pittsburgh, Princeton and Virginia. Lehigh is 1-0 on the road this season, opening the year with an 84-76 overtime victory at Marist. Just six days later, the Mountain Hawks won a 91-90 overtime thriller over Siena. Lehigh's two overtime victories in the nonleague schedule is already most in school history in the Patriot League era (which began in 1990). In that Siena win, Leufroy went full-court in the final seconds of regulation to tie the score at 80 and force overtime. In the ensuing overtime period, junior Lance Tejada scored six points for the second straight OT (also doing so at Marist). He finished with a career-high 26 points while Leufroy tied a career high with 23. Sophomore Pat Andree was also strong, recording 16 points and nine rebounds, including a number of big plays late in regulation and the beginning of overtime. He scored eight of his points in the stretch of 4:33, including a three-pointer just four seconds into overtime.
Â
Lehigh continued on Sunday by defeating Eastern University 95-70, led by six Mountain Hawks with double-figure points, marking the first time five or more Lehigh players tallied double digits since last Dec. 22 vs. Cabrini. Freshman James Karnik led the offense with 15 points and six rebounds, both career highs. Andree and Cohen each had 14 points while Leufroy tallied 12 points, freshman Caleb Bennett had 11 and Tejada recorded 10. Bennett finished a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. As a team, Lehigh recorded 11 steals, the third time in the first four games the Mountain Hawks have reached double figures. Through four games, Lehigh has averaged just 10.5 turnovers while forcing 18.5 opponent turnovers.
Â
Wednesday will mark Lehigh's first game against a Pac-12 opponent since Dec. 20, 2014 when the Mountain Hawks pulled out an 84-81 triple overtime win at Arizona State. In that game, current senior Kahron Ross (then a freshman) set a school record with 14 assists (all coming by the end of regulation). Ross also hit a clutch jumper with nine seconds remaining in the second overtime to force a third overtime period. From there, Ross continued his stellar play, earning All-Patriot League honors every season. He currently stands third nationally among active players with 556 career assists. Most recently, he had eight assists without a turnover on Sunday and for the season, owns 23 assists compared to just three turnovers. In Ross' career, the Mountain Hawks are 3-5 against power conference schools, also defeating DePaul (2014) and Mississippi State (2016).
Â
Wednesday's contest will be Lehigh's first game at USC since December of 2010, a 76-49 Trojans' victory. It will be Lehigh's first game vs. a top-10 opponent since opening last season with an 84-81 loss at No. 7/8 Xavier. USC finished last season 26-10, winning two NCAA Tournament games (over Providence and SMU) before falling 82-78 to Baylor in the Round of 32. USC is the first of five teams on the Lehigh schedule who advanced to the 2017 NCAA Tournament (also Princeton, Virginia, Mount St. Mary's and Bucknell).
Â
USC is 3-0 early in its season, defeating Cal State Fullerton (84-42), North Dakota State (75-65) and winning at Vanderbilt in overtime (93-89). On Sunday, Jordan McLaughlin scored 35 points on 12-of-19 shooting, including a game-tying three-pointer with just 28 seconds remaining. For the season, McLaughlin is averaging a team-high 19.7 points while Bennie Boatwright and Chimezie Metu are each averaging 18.3. Metu leads the team with 8.3 boards per contest while Boatwright is averaging 6.7 rebounds. Last season, the Trojans finished 26-10 and won two NCAA Tournament games before falling to Baylor. The team's top eight scorers from last season all return, led by Boatwright (15.1), Metu (14.8), McLaughlin (12.9) and Elijah Stewart (12.3).
