Lehigh Women Dominate Lafayette in 244-50 Victory

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh was victorious in all 16 events in a dominating 244-50 victory over archrival Lafayette in front of a capacity crowd of over 460 Friday night in Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawks lowered one school record, eight pool records and two freshman records on the evening.

Lehigh has now won 10-straight over its rival from Easton. The 244 points scored is the second-highest total in program history and the fourth-straight season Lehigh has scored over 200 points against Lafayette.

The foursome of Rachel Rider, Allison Morel, Audra Smires and Payton Miles kicked off the night by winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.83. Nicole Shek, Loeva Palu-Benson, Malia Wolf and Evie Gieseman teamed up to placed second with a time of 1:47.50.

Meghan Thompson opened the individual events with a win in the 1000 freestyle and crushed the 10-year-old pool record mark of 10:15.74 with her winning time of 10:02.10. Tori Connolly placed second with a time of 10:19.47 and Abby Thomson placed third with a time of 10:38.98.

Freshman Ann Foley claimed the top spot in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.51, lowering the pool record mark of 1:50.52 from 2014. Courtney Ferreira placed second with a time of 1:48.62, Marissa Wagner placed third (1:55.07) and Julianne Koch came in fourth (1:57.89).

Rachel Rider came very close to both the school and pool record marks with her winning time of 56.50 in the 100 backstroke. Shek placed second with a time of 57.55.

Morel led the way for Lehigh in the 100 breaststroke. She touched the wall first with a winning time of 1:06.19.

Lehigh swept the top three spots in the 200 butterfly, led Sydney Bornstein who touched the wall with a new pool record mark of 2:02.47. Wolf placed second (2:06.12) and Kate Bergin came in third (2:06.50).

Lehigh posted the top seven times in the 50 freestyle, led by Foley who captured her second victory of the night. The freshman claimed the winning time of 23.80. Thompson placed second (23.86) and Olivia Giampietro placed third (24.19).

Megan Fennell once again lowered her own school and freshman records in the 1-meter dive with her winning score of 266.85. Rayna Smilowitz placed second with a personal-best score of 244.64.

Foley racked up her third win of the night with the top time in the 100 freestyle. Her winning time of 50.48 lowered both the pool and freshman records. Lehigh claimed the top six spots in the 100 freestyle.

Lehigh also dominated the 200 backstroke by recording the top five times. Koch led the way with the winning time of 2:01.86, lowering the old pool record mark of 2:02.11 from 2008.

Melissa Segovia led the way for Lehigh in the 200 breaststroke with the winning time of 2:25.23. Morel placed second (2:26.37), Anna Thomas placed second (2:27.20) and Maya Carragher came in fourth (2:27.50).

Another pool record fell in the 500 freestyle when Thompson touched the wall with the winning time of 4:54.90. Connolly, Wagner and Thomson rounded out the top-four.

Smires rewrote the pool record board with her winning time of 56.78 in the 100 butterfly. Wolf, Shek and Bornstein gave Lehigh the top-four times in the event.

Fennell capped off the diving sweep for Lehigh by winning the 3-meter dive with a score of 268.42. Smilowiz came in second with a season-high score of 228.15.

Lehigh posted the top-five times in the 100 IM. Koch led all swimmers with the top time of 58.39, which set the new school record.

The Mountain Hawks capped off the night and complete the sweep of all 16 events by winning the 800 freestyle relay. Koch, Foley, Thompson and Ferreira combined for the winning time of 7:30.64, lowering the old pool record mark of 7:37.50 from 2015.
