Â
Lehigh scored the first eight points on Monday vs. the Terriers, but Boston University responded with a 12-0 run, which eventually increased to 22-3. The Mountain Hawks pulled as close as five later in the first half, then again, early in the second, but that's as close as they would come. Lehigh struggled against Boston University's press, turning the ball over 20 times for just the second time this season (also at Xavier in the season opener). The Mountain Hawks knocked down just 30 percent of their three-pointers (6-of-20).
Â
Despite battling an illness, senior Tim Kempton led the offense with 18 points behind 7-of-12 shooting. He now has 1,836 career points, moving into a tie for seventh place in Patriot League history. Freshman Jordan Cohen was a bright spot, scoring 16 points behind 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range. Sophomore Matt Holba brought great energy off the bench, posting two points and three assists while grabbing a career-high nine rebounds.
Â
Lehigh did shoot 50 percent from the field in the second half after shooting just 37 percent in the first, but the Mountain Hawks couldn't overcome the turnovers, and the Terriers' second-half shooting (52 percent from the field). The loss was Lehigh's largest home defeat since a 74-57 loss to Colgate on Mar. 1, 2014. The Mountain Hawks had gone 22 straight Patriot League regular season home games without a double-figure loss. Boston University became the first team to sweep the season series in the all-time history between the Mountain Hawks and Terriers. The teams had split the season series in each of Boston University's first three years in the Patriot League.
Â
The Mountain Hawks are set to begin February, a month that treated them well last season as Lehigh finished last February 9-0, the program's first undefeated month since November of 1993. Lehigh is just 1-2 at Loyola since the Greyhounds joined the Patriot League, winning 69-63 on Feb. 7, 2015. Wednesday's game is big in the league standings as the Mountain Hawks (6-4) are currently in sole possession of fourth place, one game ahead of Loyola, Holy Cross and Colgate, all tied for fifth at 5-5.
Â
Loyola enters Wednesday's matchup 11-10 overall, 5-5 in Patriot League play. The Greyhounds are also 6-2 at home. Loyola has won two straight (over Holy Cross and at Lafayette) and three of its last five, beginning with a home win over Boston University two Mondays ago. The Greyhounds are led by Jarred Jones, who leads the team in scoring (14.9 points per game) and rebounding (6.3). Andre Walker isn't far behind, at 14.6 points and a team-leading 3.7 assists per contest. Cam Gregory is up to 8.3 points per game while Andrew Kostecka averages 7.9. The Greyhounds are allowing opponents to shoot just 31.8 percent from three-point range on the season. However, Lehigh was 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) in the first meeting.
Â
The all-time series between Lehigh and Loyola is tied at eight. The sides have alternated wins ever since Loyola joined the Patriot League for the 2013-14 season. Lehigh is 1-2 at Loyola over that span. Prior to meeting as league opponents, the teams previously played on Nov. 26, 1988, an 86-72 Lehigh victory. The sides first met in 1912-13, a 41-19 Lehigh victory. Loyola's first win was in 1915-16 by a 35-15 final.
Â
The Mountain Hawks hit the road once again this weekend as they play at American on Saturday at 1 p.m. Lehigh will return home next Wednesday (Feb. 8) to host Bucknell at 7 p.m.
