BOSTON, Mass. – The Lehigh women's basketball team was unable to maintain a strong start, and fell 64-50 on Saturday afternoon at Boston University. After a hot start shooting the ball, Lehigh shot just 23.7 percent over the final three quarters and finished the game 16-for-52 (30.8 percent) and shot 28 percent from three-point range. Freshman Camryn Buhr led the team with 12 points and nine rebounds. Junior Quinci Mann had nine points and seven rebounds, freshman Hannah Hedstrom tallied five points and four assists, and freshman Paige Galiani scored a career-high five points. Senior guard Kayla Burton added four points and two steals. Lehigh committed a season-high 24 turnovers in the loss and was outscored 21-7 off turnovers and 38-14 in the paint. The Brown and White held a 12-5 edge in second chance points while outrebounding the Terriers 45-35. The loss drops Lehigh to 6-14, 1-8 PL, while Boston improves to 7-13, 5-4 PL.
Lehigh struggled to contain junior center Sophie Beaudry, who netted a game-high 20 points on 8-of-10 from the field. Payton Hauck added 10 points and Sarah Hope scored eight points, including two three-pointers that beat the buzzer at the end of the first and third quarters.
The Mountain Hawks started the game well on the offensive end, shooting 50 percent (7-for-14) in the opening 10 minutes. Five early points for Buhr, a three by Mann and a layup from Gena Grundhoffer got Lehigh out to a 10-8 lead at the midway point. A three from Pascoe gave Lehigh its largest lead of the quarter at 13-8 just under a minute later, before BU closed the quarter on a 12-5 run. A Devaney three put Lehigh up 18-13 with 2:12 to go, before BU scored four quick points, including a layup off a steal. The Terriers took advantage of a late Lehigh turnover when Sarah Hope drilled a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to put BU up 20-18 after one quarter.
Lehigh held a 7-2 edge in second chance points in the opening frame, but BU outscored Lehigh 11-3 in points off turnovers and 14-4 in the paint. Lehigh also made four three-pointers in the first quarter, but was just 3-of-19 from the outside the rest of the way.
Lehigh scored the first five points of the second quarter thanks to a three pointer by Burton and a layup from Buhr to take a 23-20 lead with 8:50 remaining until halftime. The Terriers tied it at 23 with a three-pointer by Naiyah Thompson, which turned the tables for the rest of the quarter, sparking a 17-1 BU run to close the half, including a 13-0 stretch. The Mountain Hawks trailed 37-24 at the half after missing their final 14 field goal attempts of the quarter and finished the half shooting 30 percent (9-for-30).
"The first quarter they came out and played well," said head coach Sue Troyan. "Boston made a good adjustment by taking the press off when we were getting some open looks and knocking them down. We really struggled in the second quarter on the offensive end. I didn't think we took great shots. I really thought in that quarter particularly, our defense was dictated by our offensive struggles and we lost intensity and focus."
The Brown and White had a quick spark coming out of the locker room, cutting the deficit down to 12 at the 7:37 mark after three points from Buhr and a layup from Hedstrom. Beadry responded for BU by scoring seven unanswered points to open up the game at 47-29 before Buhr ended the run with a free throw with 5:01 remaining. Boston got the lead to 20 for the first time at the 2:36 mark at 51-31, and held a 20 point advantage through three quarters after Hope drained a three-pointer in the final seconds to make it 56-36.
Two free throws from Hope at 7:04 of the fourth upped the lead to a game-high 22 points at 58-36. A three-pointer from Galiani got the deficit down to 17 with 2:09 left, and Lehigh scored the game's final five points over the final 1:24 with a layup from Cameryn Benz, a free throw from Mann and a pair of free throws from Galiani, which brought the final score to 64-50.
The Mountain Hawks return to the Lehigh Valley on Wednesday night, Feb. 1 for their next game against Loyola. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Stabler Arena.
