BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Winners of five of its last six games, the Lehigh men's basketball team will begin the second round of Patriot League play at home when the Mountain Hawks host Boston University on Monday. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and will be televised nation-wide by CBS Sports Network. On Monday, the Mountain Hawks will take part in the Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers initiative. Also, the NCAA Men's Basketball National Championship trophy will be showcased in the lobby pregame for fans to view and take photos as the trophy is on a tour around the country to emphasize the regular season in the Road to the Final Four. In addition, the Bucks County Bungee Jumpers, an incredible youth jump rope team, will be back by popular demand, performing at halftime.
Tickets for Monday's game are free with a Lehigh ID and as low as $5 for the general public. Lehigh students can take the Campus Connector bus to the game, with buses set to leave at 6:30 p.m. from Packer Ave. and Pi Beta Phi at 6:34, with buses running continually back from the Goodman Campus. 8:33, 8:53, 9:13, 9:33, etc. For the complete campus connector bus schedule, please click here.
The Mountain Hawks will look to avenge a tough 75-61 loss at Boston University on Jan. 2, their first league loss of the season. Lehigh then dropped a home game to Loyola, but has bounced back in a big way, going 5-1 since. At the midway point of the league schedule, the Mountain Hawks stood tied for second place at 6-3 and are still tied for second in the loss column after Navy's win over Holy Cross Saturday. Monday's opponent, Boston University, also stands 6-3.
Last time out at Colgate, Lehigh turned an early 10-2 hole into a convincing 76-62 win. The Mountain Hawks responded from the early hole with a 19-5 run. The Raiders made an early second-half run to pull as close as five, but Lehigh again answered and went up by as many as 20 heading into the final minute. A strong team effort saw senior Tim Kempton post his 12th-career double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Kempton scored eight of his points in a 58-second span late in the first half, using a dunk and consecutive three-pointers to help Lehigh open a 40-30 halftime advantage. Junior Kahron Ross just missed a double-double, recording 16 points, a career-high eight rebounds and nine assists. With his nine assists, Ross moved into the top 10 in Patriot League history for career assists (currently 486). Sophomore Kyle Leufroy had 11 points, junior Brandon Alston recorded 10 and senior Austin Price scored nine.
The Mountain Hawks' defense was strong, holding a team in the 60s (or below) in a second straight game for the first time since early December when they allowed 58 then 62 against Robert Morris and Stony Brook, respectively. At one point, Colgate had hit 11-of-16 three-pointers, but the Raiders were just 1-of-8 the rest of the way. Lehigh as a team shot 51.9 percent from the field and exactly 50 percent from three-point range, marking the 11th and fourth time the Mountain Hawks have reached 50 percent in each respective category. Lehigh turned the ball over just nine times at Colgate, its second straight game setting a season-low for turnovers.
Monday will be the first of at least two Lehigh games on CBS Sports Network (also Feb. 12 at Holy Cross). The Mountain Hawks hit the road on Wednesday and Saturday for games at Loyola and American then close out the regular season with four of their last six games at home.
Boston University is in the midst of an up-and-down season, especially in Patriot League play. The Terriers began their league slate with a 5-0 record, but then lost their next three, at Loyola, vs. Colgate and at Bucknell. Most recently, Boston University earned an overtime win against Army West Point. Eric Fanning leads the team in points, averaging 14.6 along with a team-high 6.3 rebounds. Justin Alston comes in at 11.7 and 6.1, respectively, while Cedric Hankerson has scored 11.2 points per game. Rounding out the starting lineup is freshman Tyler Scanlon (7.2 points per game) and Kyle Foreman (6.1 points and 4.9 assists per contest).
Boston University has won two straight against Lehigh, both games in Boston. Most recently, the Terriers picked up a 75-61 win on Jan. 2 at Case Gymnasium. Meanwhile, Lehigh has won two in a row against the Terriers at home, 81-73 on Jan. 2, 2016 and 89-86 on Jan. 31, 2015. The teams have split each of the last two seasons, with the home teams winning each contest. In the Terriers' first season in the Patriot League (2014-15), both road teams won. Boston University won the first-ever meeting between the two sides in 1968-69 by an 81-56 final. It marked the only meeting between the two schools before the Patriot League era.
Following Monday's game, the Mountain Hawks hit the road for two more games this week, at Loyola on Wednesday (7 p.m.) and American on Saturday (2 p.m.).
