Late pins help No. 10 Cornell rally past No. 7 Lehigh 21-20 in sold-out Grace Hall

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A sold-out Leeman-Turner Arena saw No. 7 Lehigh and No. 10 Cornell split 10 bouts Saturday afternoon, but back-to-back falls at 174 and 184 helped the visiting Big Red overcome a 17-3 intermission deficit to defeat the Mountain Hawks 21-20.

The Mountain Hawks won four of the first five bouts, scoring bonus points in three of those victories, but the Big Red won the first four bouts coming out of intermission to snap Lehigh's five-dual winning streak. Lehigh falls to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the EIWA with the loss.

A pin from neutral by Cornell's Brian Realbuto over sophomore Ryan Preisch changed the complexion of the dual and top-ranked Gabe Dean's first period pin of freshman Andrew Price gave the Big Red an 18-17 lead it would not relinquish. Cornell is now 6-2 overall and 3-0 in EIWA duals.

Trailing by four after nine bouts, Lehigh needed a win by fall from senior heavyweight Doug Vollaro to claim the dual, but Vollaro was only able to muster a 3-1 sudden victory decision over Jeramy Sweany.

"Everybody wrestled hard," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "Everybody came out and fought. A couple things do differently and it's a different dual. Overall, we came out to wrestle. Our lightweights did what they were supposed to do. We competed really well in the back five and overall just fought hard."

In the opener at 125, junior Darian Cruz built a 12-1 first period lead over Noah Baughman and added an escape, takedown and two-point near fall in the second to claim a 17-1 technical fall in 4:02.

Cornell posted its first win at 133 as Mark Grey used takedowns in the first and third periods to hold off freshman Joe Lobeck 6-4, but Lehigh took the next three bouts to take a solid 17-3 lead into the break.

A third period escape proved to be the only points in senior Randy Cruz's 1-0 victory over Will Koll at 141, the only non-bonus win for Lehigh in the first half. Senior Laike Gardner impressed against Dylan Realbuto at 149, breaking open a 2-0 match with a second period reversal followed by a takedown and four point near fall. Another takedown and four point near fall in the third helped clinch a 16-1 technical fall win.

Freshman Jordan Kutler capped the Lehigh run with a 13-4 major decision over Taylor Simaz at 157. Kutler finished with four takedowns, plus a reversal and two stalling points, in addition to 3:37 of advantage time.

The Big Red pulled a match back coming out of intermission as Dylan Palacio edged freshman Cole Walter 3-2 at 165 on the strength of a third period takedown.

The key bout of the dual matched the sixth-ranked Preisch against fourth-ranked Realbuto at 174. Preisch struck first with a takedown but Realbuto answered with an escape and takedown of his own. A Preisch escape left the score tied 3-3 after one period. Realbuto escaped in the second period, and Preisch got out early in the third to knot the match 4-4 with riding time not a factor. A Realbuto shot led to a scramble and Realbuto eventually was able to stack Preisch up from neutral and get the fall in 6:15 to bring Cornell within 17-12.

"It was a great match," Santoro said. "Unfortunately for us (Preisch) got caught in a scramble and pinned. He'll learn from that and we'll get better."

After Dean gave Cornell the lead, senior Ben Haas had an opportunity to put Lehigh back in front, but a second period penalty point for stalling proved to be the difference in a 2-1 win for Ben Honis at 197.

Trailing 21-17 after nine bouts, Lehigh needed a technical fall or pin from Vollaro, who tried to take Sweany down to his back in overtime, but could only muster the two points to win by decision.

Cornell avenged Lehigh's 23-15 dual win in Ithaca and has now won in its last three trips to Bethlehem.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Friday night when they host No. 5 Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Tickets can be purchased online at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during normal business hours. On Sunday, January 29, Lehigh will travel to No. 15 Michigan for a 2 p.m. match.
