BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Boston University outscored the Lehigh women's basketball team 37-17 in the fourth quarter to overcome a 17-point, deficit to pick up a 69-64 win on Monday afternoon at Stabler Arena. Junior Quinci Mann had a team-high 20 points, including a trio of three-pointers, Mae Williams tallied a career-high nine points to go with four rebounds, and Kayla Burton had eight points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior Taylor Campbell totaled six points and four rebounds with one steal. Freshmen Gena Grundhoffer and Cameryn Benz led the way with five rebounds each and Hannah Hedstrom had a game-high six assists. Boston freshman Nia Irving had a double-double and scored 16 of her game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter, while junior Sophie Beaudry finished with 16 points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks. The loss was Lehigh's fifth in a row and drops them to 5-8 (0-2 PL) on the season, while BU improves to 4-9 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League.
"We played some of our better basketball through the first three quarters and I thought we were in pretty clear control going into the fourth quarter," said head coach Sue Troyan. "Give BU credit, they shot the ball really well and I don't think we defended particularly well in the fourth quarter. That has been a consistent theme over the last four or five games, and that a little concerning. It's something we need to look at as a staff."
Mann opened the game's scoring with a three-pointer for Lehigh before Boston ran off the next seven, highlighted by a three-point play from Irving. Bernadette Devaney ended the run with a breakaway layup off a Hedstrom assist. Devaney later assisted on a Buhr fastbreak bucket, before Grundhoffer knotted the game 9-9 with a jumper in the paint. Hailey Pascoe scored her first points of the game with a triple from the corner to give Lehigh a three-point advantage, helping the team to a 12-11 lead after the first quarter.
The Mountain Hawks carried a 31-22 lead into halftime after a solid second quarter that saw them outscore the Terriers 19-11 and shoot 40 percent (6-for-15) from the field. Campbell grabbed a steal near midcourt and took it to the hoop herself for two points at the 7:19 mark to put Lehigh up 16-15. Mann and Meagan Eripret added points in the paint shortly after to put Lehigh up 20-15. After BU got within two points after a three, Burton and Pascoe combined for three straight triples to put Lehigh up 29-20. Grundhoffer added two free throws with one minute remaining to give Lehigh 31 points going into the half.
After another solid third quarter for Lehigh that saw them build up their largest lead of the game at 17 points, Mann hit a jumper in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter to give Lehigh a 17-point lead once again at 49-32. Lehigh surpassed the 50-point mark on a pair of Campbell free throws at 8:33, and Mann drained along range shot to give Lehigh a 60-44 lead with 5:33 remaining.
From that point, Boston ran off 25 of the game's final 29 points over the final 5:18, with all of Lehigh's points coming from the free throw line. Devaney gave Lehigh an 11-point edge after two free throws with 3:38 to go, but BU was able to rally and tie the game with 1:27 remaining and Irving gave BU the lead for good with a putback bucket with just 28 seconds left. Irving rattled off eight straight points for BU at one point, as the Mountain Hawks missed their last six shots of the game and committed six turnovers in the final quarter.
"Some of the times that we did break the press, we took rushed shots, and they weren't shots that we want to take there," Troyan said. "Part of that is learning and doing a better job. We have to get better and finish out a close game in the fourth quarter. For both Army and BU, I feel like we gave both those games away."
The Terriers, who failed to score more than 11 points in each of the first three quarters, shot nearly 69 percent (11-for-16) in the final frame and finished 25-for 66 (37.9 percent). The Mountain Hawks shot 34.4 percent (21-for-61) from the field, while BU held a 38-24 advantage in the paint and a 16-12 edge in points off turnovers.
Lehigh will now head out on the road for two games against Loyola on Thursday evening and American this Saturday afternoon. Both games will be streamed on the Patriot League Network (PatriotLeague.TV) along with a live online radio broadcast with Matt Markus on Lehighsports.com/watch.
