
Lehigh hosts Holy Cross Saturday in rematch of Patriot League Championship Game

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a big road win at Bucknell on Wednesday, the Lehigh men's basketball team returns to Stabler Arena on Saturday for a rematch of the 2016 Patriot League Championship Game as the Mountain Hawks host Holy Cross at 2 p.m. In Lehigh's last game, the team trailed for just 36 seconds, holding off several Bison runs and pulling away in the final minutes for its fifth win in its last seven tries at Bucknell.

The Mountain Hawks continued their impressive success in Sojka Pavilion, improving to 7-10 all time in the building while the rest of the Patriot League is just 18-91. Lehigh used an 8-0 run to open a 14-point first-half lead, Bucknell pulled within six at the break, but the Mountain Hawks began the second half on a 12-0 run. Leading by as many as 18, Bucknell came back to tie the score on numerous occasions before a 7-0 Lehigh run turned a 66-66 tie into a 73-66 lead. The Bison couldn't pull any closer than four the rest of the way as the Mountain Hawks pulled away, 82-71. Making it even more impressive, Lehigh made its run with senior Tim Kempton on the bench with foul trouble. Kempton then came in with 4:07 remaining and went on to score five key points, including a three-point play in the final minute to turn a six-point lead into a nine-point advantage.

Freshman Pat Andree also impressed with his strongest all-around game of the season. He finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks in a career-high 34 minutes. Senior Austin Price also scored 16 points, knocking down his first four three-point attempts. Lehigh hit nine of its first 11 treys, finishing the game 10-of-17 (58.8 percent). Overall, the Mountain Hawks shot 50 percent from the field (29-of-58) and have knocked down 84-of-154 field goals (54.5 percent) over their past three games, shooting 50 percent or higher in nine of 16 games so far this season.

Junior Kahron Ross tallied 11 points, five assists and two steals, moving into third place in school history for career assists (currently 456). Junior Brandon Alston also scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting while adding five rebounds and an assist. Freshman Jordan Cohen had seven points. Alston and Cohen combined for all seven points during the team's big 7-0 run late in the second half. Lehigh's 31 bench points were tied for second most this season, only behind the 36 against Saint Francis (Pa.). After committing eight first-half turnovers, Lehigh had just three in the second half to finish with only 11 for the game, tied for a season low.

Holy Cross enters Saturday 9-9, 3-2 in Patriot League play following a 71-54 win against Lafayette Wednesday. The Crusaders' two losses have come at Boston University (61-55) and home vs. Bucknell (68-49). Overall, Holy Cross has won five of its last seven games, ending nonleague play with wins at Sacred Heart and vs. Marist. Malachi Alexander leads the team in scoring (14.2) and rebounding (5.5) while Karl Charles leads the Crusaders in assists with 70 in 18 games. Robert Champion is also averaging 13.0 points and 3.6 rebounds. As a team, Holy Cross is shooting 42.8 percent from the field while allowing opponents to shoot 46.5 percent. The Crusaders have been outrebounded by an average of 8.8 per contest.

Lehigh won the two regular season meetings last season before Holy Cross downed the Mountain Hawks in the Patriot League Championship Game. Lehigh has still won three of its last five games against the Crusaders. Last season, Lehigh's 87-66 win at Holy Cross was its largest-ever margin of victory on the road against the Crusaders. Lehigh and Holy Cross first met in 1976, an 84-60 Holy Cross victory, before reconvening for Patriot League play in the early 1990s.

Following Saturday's game, Lehigh will hit the road next Wednesday to face Navy at 7 p.m. before returning home next Saturday to host Lafayette, also at 7 p.m. Â The game is presented by Urology Specialists of the Lehigh Valley and free foam fingers will be given away to the first 2,500 fans. In addition, several members of the 2011-12 Mountain Hawks, who beat Duke in the NCAA Tournament, will be returning for the game and will be recognized at halftime.
