BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team looks to get back on track this weekend when the Mountain Hawks head to Washington, D.C. for a pair of games. Lehigh faces American in a Patriot League showdown on Saturday (12 p.m.) before heading to Georgetown on Sunday (1 p.m.). The Mountain Hawks are coming off a pair of tight, one-goal games against quality opponents.
Last weekend, Lehigh dropped a 2-1 final to Bucknell before falling to Providence, 1-0. The story of the weekend was the Mountain Hawks' defense. The Friars entered having scored 2.43 goals per game, including six over their previous two contests, but just one of their 21 shots found the back of the cage on Sunday. The backstop of the defense over the final three halves of the weekend was freshman Paige Innarella, who stopped 11-of-13 shots sent her way in her first collegiate action. Innarella was recognized with Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week honors.
Sophomore Teresa Carotenuto scored Lehigh's goal late in the game vs. Bucknell to give the Mountain Hawks a chance down the stretch. She now leads the team with two goals and five points on the season. Junior Laura Yuh also enjoyed a strong weekend, recording a pair of defensive saves over the two games while helping spearhead Lehigh's defensive unit.
The Mountain Hawks will face American on Saturday, who own a 5-2 record, coming off a dominating 8-1 win over Holy Cross in its Patriot League opener. The Eagles' only losses have come to Old Dominion (2-1) and Maryland (6-2) while also beating Richmond (3-1), James Madison (2-1) and Fairfield (4-2). Natalie Konerth leads the team in points with 15 behind seven goals and one assist. Leah DiGiandomenico owns 10 points (four goals, two assists) while two others have nine. Natalie Marsh and Rachel Stefano have each made a defensive save. A pair of Eagles have split time in goal, led by Maura Jacobs, who has made seven starts with a 2.25 GAA and a .743 save percentage. Alexandra Morris has tallied a 1.33 GAA and .636 save percentage in three starts.
American is 18-0 in the all-time series, but the Mountain Hawks have been close on multiple occasions, including last season when Lehigh dropped a 1-0 final in overtime. Lehigh also lost 2-0 in 2013 while dropping a 6-5 double overtime final in 2006.
Georgetown enters the weekend with a 2-6 record, also facing Old Dominion on Friday. The Hoyas began the season with two straight wins, beating Davidson (3-1) and Appalachian State (4-3 in overtime), but have since lost six in a row. Three Georgetown players own six points as Lindsay Getz has three goals while Aliyah Graves-Brown and Michaela Brown each have two goals and two assists. Devin Holmes leads the team with four defensive saves. Rachel Skonecki has started every game in goal, recording a 3.33 GAA and .740 save percentage.
Lehigh leads Georgetown 9-4 in the all-time series, which includes winning three of the last four games. The Hoyas pulled out a 1-0 win last year, but two seasons ago when Lehigh played at Georgetown, the Mountain Hawks earned a hard-fought 4-2 road victory.
Following this weekend, the Mountain Hawks return home next Friday (Sept. 30) to host Holy Cross in a Patriot League matchup. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
