Mountain Hawks drop league contest at American

9/24/2016 4:23:00 PM | Field Hockey

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Lehigh field hockey team was down just two at the half, but American broke the game open in the second as the Eagles handed the Mountain Hawks a 7-0 loss on Saturday afternoon. Lehigh was within striking distance until midway through the second half when American pulled away.

"We were playing a high-caliber opponent, so we can't afford to not play our best game," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "It was the best team we've seen so far this season and we struggled to execute what we had hoped."

American opened the scoring at the 8:19 mark when Haley Bowcutt beat Lehigh freshman goalkeeper Paige Innarella on a deflection. Both teams generated scoring chances in the first half, with both creating two penalty corners. Lehigh's first shot came by senior Marissa Glatt in the 14th minute while the Mountain Hawks fired their first shot on goal, by freshman Trish Reilly, in the 24th minute. In between, American took a 2-0 lead, which was the halftime score.

The Eagles began to create separation in the second half, but the Mountain Hawks wouldn't back down. Lehigh's best chances came in the final minutes, firing three shots over the final 1:36, which included two shots on goal from Glatt. One was saved by goalkeeper Maura Jacobs while another led to a defensive save.

Final shots were 27-11 in favor of American while the Mountain Hawks held a 6-5 advantage in penalty corners. Innarella made eight saves while sophomore Kendra Sandhu posted a defensive stop.

"Jackie Renda had a fabulous game," said Dallmeyer. "As a coach, it was nice to have a player I could move around into a variety of positions, bringing up the energy and intensity on the field to help us move in the right direction."

The Mountain Hawks remain in Washington, D.C. on Sunday to face the Georgetown Hoyas. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.
