Lehigh falls 3-2 in back-and-forth contest at Georgetown

9/25/2016 3:26:00 PM | Field Hockey

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Lehigh field hockey team battled back from a pair of deficits, but Georgetown scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with less than four minutes left in regulation to down the Mountain Hawks, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Teresa Carotenuto and senior Gabby Tofig scored Lehigh's goals as the Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back when they return home Friday to host Holy Cross.

"We definitely worked hard in preparing for this game and I think the statistics show that," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We put more shots on goal than they did and gave up our fewest amounts of shots on goal this season. Statistically, when you are producing, you need to be able to win the game, and we didn't do that today."

An even game saw both teams firing 10 shots, each taking four in the first half and six in the second. Five of Lehigh's six second-half shots were on goal, but Georgetown goalkeeper Rachel Skonecki stopped four of them to prevent the Mountain Hawks from completing the comeback.

The Hoyas posted the game's first three shots, and first penalty corner, converting their third shot into a 1-0 lead as Sam Hickey redirected a shot from the top of the circle.

Most of the first half saw defense stand tall as Lehigh allowed just one shot and one penalty corner after Georgetown took the lead with 20:47 on the clock. The Mountain Hawks began to generate chances and converted one into the tying goal as Carotenuto scored her third goal of the season in the 34th minute to pull even heading into halftime.

Just over 11 minutes into the second half, Georgetown took the lead, but the Mountain Hawks pulled even once again just under 10 minutes later, at the 56:09 mark, as Tofig made a redirection to tie the score at two.

The back-and-forth contest continued as the Hoyas scored the game-winning goal at the 66:15 mark. Lehigh responded by taking three shots, two of which were on goal, over the final 2:42, but it wasn't enough.

"A point of emphasis this week preparing for this game was focusing on our forward movement and making sure we were creating scoring opportunities, which we were struggling with previously," said Dallmeyer. "I was happy we were able to get as many shots off as we did, but those shots didn't have the strength or placement to get in the net. Now that we're creating opportunities, we need to be able to execute."

Final shots were even at 10 while the Mountain Hawks held an 8-5 edge in penalty corners. Freshman goalkeeper Paige Innarella made two saves across Georgetown's Skonecki, who made four.

"Defensively, to only give up five shots on goal is an accomplishment, but we need to be able to keep them out of the net," said Dallmeyer.

The Mountain Hawks now return home for their next four games, beginning on Friday when they host Holy Cross in a big Patriot League matchup. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
