Glatt’s second-half goal gives Lehigh key 1-0 Patriot League win over Holy Cross

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - A second-half goal from senior Marissa Glatt, combined with a strong defensive effort, led the Lehigh field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Holy Cross on a rainy Friday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks ended the first half with 10 straight shots, but converted the game's only goal less than 10 minutes into the second half to improve to 1-2 in Patriot League play.
"We knew this was going to be a battle," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "It's always a really close game against Holy Cross. I was really happy because there have been things we've been working on in practice that we were able to execute today. We did a nice job improvising and making sure if we don't have the perfect play in front of us, we could create something."
The win snapped an eight-game losing streak. It also marked the Mountain Hawks' third straight win against the Crusaders and first 1-0 victory against Holy Cross since 1991.
"Going in through a little bit of a drought with the wins was tough," said Dallmeyer. "We had a lot of close games and we fell short. We have not necessarily been able to execute in pressure situations. The last 20 minutes of this game was high pressure. I was really happy with the way the team was able to execute the qame plan and adjust without the coaching staff having to call a timeout. I think that really shows our hockey IQ is increasing and we're starting to have more confidence in ourselves as field hockey players."
Holy Cross held a 4-1 edge in shots early in the first half, but the Mountain Hawks responded with a vengeance. Beginning in the 25th minute, Lehigh earned five penalty corners in less than a two-minute span, but were unable to beat Crusaders' goalkeeper Marcia LaPlante. The Mountain Hawks went into halftime with an 11-4 edge in shots.
The Crusaders tallied the first three corners of the second half, but it was Lehigh who earned the next corner, and it led to a 1-0 lead at the 44:08 mark. From the top of the circle, Glatt made a move to her left and fired a shot through traffic that found the back of the cage for her second goal of the season.
Lehigh's defense allowed just three shots the rest of the way, none on goal, while continuing to attack the cage. The Mountain Hawks were unable to add insurance, despite three more shots on goal, but it didn't matter as Lehigh wrapped up the victory.
"Laura Yuh has had a phenomenal season and I felt like she really stepped up for us today," said Dallmeyer. "Jackie Renda has continued to perform very well. They really carried us in the last 10 minutes of the game, coming up with big plays and making sure we were able to execute the game plan."
Final shots were 17-10 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held an 11-8 advantage in penalty corners. Lehigh's 17 shots were a season high. Freshman Paige Innarella made four saves for her first-career shutout while LaPlante made seven for Holy Cross.
Lehigh returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Siena at 12 p.m.
