Lehigh pulls out 4-3 overtime thriller over Siena

10/2/2016 2:37:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Sophomore Lauren Dice scored her first goal of the season to give the Lehigh field hockey team a 3-1 lead, then netted her second goal less than three minutes into overtime, to give the Mountain Hawks a thrilling 4-3 win over Siena on Sunday afternoon. Lehigh finished with a commanding 36-9 edge in shots, but the Saints scored the final two goals of regulation to force an extra session. The marks the Mountain Hawks' second straight, heading into a big Patriot League matchup vs. Colgate on Saturday.

"It's nice to be able to have two wins in one weekend because we've been struggling to string them together," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmayer. "This game was definitely a challenge for us, coming off Holy Cross being such an emotional, intense game. Coming into this game, Siena was a team we were paying close attention to because they've improved a lot over the last couple years. We knew that they were able to pull off some big upset games and we wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be against us."

The Saints struck first in the game's fifth minute as Cailyn Rafi made a hard pass from outside the circle and Morgan Dennett made a deflection past Lehigh freshman goalkeeper Paige Innarella.

The Mountain Hawks responded with the game's next three goals, beginning at the 7:05 mark when sophomore Teresa Carotenuto rocketed a direct shot off a penalty corner into the goal to even the score at one.

Late in the first half, senior Gabby Tofig put home her second goal of the season to give Lehigh a 2-1 lead. Classmate Marissa Glatt corralled a rebound and found Tofig, who beat Siena goalkeeper Mary Crumlish from a tough angle at the 31:11 mark.

Dice scored her first goal of the season just 3:02 into the second half, redirecting a long pass from sophomore Isabel McKeown and finding the open cage to give Lehigh a 3-1 lead.

The Mountain Hawks continued to attack, finishing the second half with a 24-4 edge in shots, but it was Siena who scored the game's next two goals. The Saints scored at 39:26 and 59:43 to pull even at three, setting the stage for Dice's heroics.

Just over two minutes into overtime, Carotenuto created a penalty stroke while attacking the cage. Dice was subbed in and promptly scored to give Lehigh the dramatic win.

"Lauren Dice would definitely be our player of the game," said Dallmeyer. "She has been working really hard to gain a spot back on the field and today, she certainly earned it in more ways than one. To be subbed in for a stroke is probably the most pressure situation a coach can put you in. It was really nice to see her perform."

Final shots were 36-9 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 16-6 edge in penalty corners. Innarella made two saves for Lehigh while Crumlish stopped 16 for Siena.

"We worked on continuing our attacking momentum," said Dallmeyer. "Thirty six shots is a lot and I'm really happy with what we were able to produce on the attacking end, but not what we were able to finish. We're struggling to finish in pressure situations."

The Mountain Hawks look to keep the momentum going when they host Colgate on Saturday at 11 a.m.

"Colgate is a huge game for us," said Dallmeyer. "We anticipate they're going to come out hungry for a win. We need to make sure we're fixing what we need to fix from this game, so we can execute properly. We won't be able to play like we did today and come out with a win."
