Lehigh earns dominant 6-0 win over Colgate

10/8/2016 2:30:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team scored early and often as the Mountain Hawks defeated Colgate 6-0 on Sunday, marking their second straight shutout over a Patriot League opponent. The six-goal margin marked Lehigh's largest-ever margin of victory in a Patriot League contest. Six different Mountain Hawks scored goals in a strong effort from start to finish. The win marks Lehigh's third straight overall as it improves to 2-2 in league play.

"This was one of the best performances we've had all season, so I was really happy to see things come together at the right time," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We watched a lot of film on Colgate and knew that they were going to be a talented team. We had specific things we needed to execute today in order to beat them and we executed all of those things, which resulted in a lot of goals. I was happy to see that they were very focused on the scouting report and making the adjustments we needed to do specifically for this game."

In the win, Lehigh scored its most goals since Sept. 9, 2012 when it defeated Towson, 6-3. The Mountain Hawks also picked up their largest shutout and margin of victory since a 9-0 win over Robert Morris on Sept. 11, 2004. Lehigh pitched a shutout in consecutive Patriot League games for the first time in school history. The Mountain Hawks also shut-out Colgate for the first time in the Patriot League era; their last shutout of the Raiders was in 1986.

"We were able to hold possession for the majority of the game, which was great," said Dallmeyer. "When we saw things start to slip a little bit, we set a goal to make sure that we were holding strong defensively. Once we focused the shift between scoring a lot of goals to making sure we were possessing in the backfield and doing a better job defensively in the circle, we were able to refocus and get possession back."

Colgate tallied the game's first three shots, but freshman Paige Innarella held strong in making two saves. Lehigh quickly capitalized on the momentum as sophomore Lauren Dice scored Lehigh's third straight goal dating back to last time out vs. Siena, giving her side a 1-0 advantage just 3:28 into the game.

Following a pair of saves, junior Isabel McKeown found freshman Amanda Boyer, who converted her first-career goal to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 advantage in the 16th minute. Sophomore Teresa Carotenuto wrapped up the first-half scoring with a rocket shot from just inside the top of the circle at the 30:22 mark.

The Mountain Hawks quickly extended their lead in the second half as senior Marissa Glatt scored at the 40:30 mark, then classmate Gabby Tofig made the score 5-0 at 45:27, on a play which saw McKeown earn her second assist.

Sophomore Lindsay Alvarez wrapped up the scoring at 54:13, taking a nifty pass from Glatt and converting her first-career goal. The six goals tied for the most-ever goals Lehigh has ever scored in a Patriot League game.

"The best part about this team is we don't have one person we're relying on to carry us," said Dallmeyer. "We have a variety of people who can step up. That was proven in the distribution of goals and assists today. Everyone contributed and everyone performed at a high level for a long period of time."

Final shots were 30-9 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held an 8-2 edge in penalty corners. Innarella made four saves before being relieved by junior Katie Morris, who made one.

The Mountain Hawks look to continue the momentum in 24 hours when they host Towson on Sunday at 12 p.m.

"Last week was a good turning point in the season to start to gain that confidence, but we didn't play last weekend the way that we played today," said Dallmeyer. "For things to come together and to have them so enthusiastic every second they were on the field and so focused, it was a really big deal for where we are at this point in the season."
