Mountain Hawks don’t allow a shot in impressive 5-0 shutout of Towson

10/9/2016 2:39:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team continued the momentum it built from Saturday's 6-0 win over Colgate by earning a dominant 5-0 victory over Towson Sunday. Senior Marissa Glatt led the offensive charge with two goals for her second-career multi-goal game while the Mountain Hawks outshot the Tigers, 20-0, in an impressive all-around effort. The victory marks Lehigh's fourth straight, which is its longest winning streak since the 1986 season.

The balanced offense continued as four different Mountain Hawks scored a goal on Sunday, one day after six different players recorded a goal against the Raiders.
"I was really pleased that we were able to pick up where we left off yesterday," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "The energy was great and it translated into the game in the first minutes of being on the field. We had talked about trying to string two games back-to-back with really good performances, which we hadn't really done in the past. We wanted to change that today and I felt like we did a really nice job of making adjustments and keeping our energy and our speed really high."

Lehigh opened the scoring at the 14:50 mark as senior Gabby Tofig made a redirection of a pass towards Glatt, who subsequently made a redirection past Towson goalkeeper Emilee Woodall. Less than three minutes later, the Mountain Hawks doubled their lead as senior Kassidy Green was stationed outside the circle on the right side of the field and played a long pass in front to sophomore Isabel McKeown, who made the redirection past Woodall at the 17:38 mark.

Just before halftime, sophomore Lindsay Alvarez scored her second goal in as many days, firing a hard shot from just inside the top of the circle.

Lehigh continued to attack in the second half, taking a 4-0 lead at the 38:39 mark as sophomore Lauren Dice made a hard pass from just outside the circle and Glatt converted on the deflection.

The Mountain Hawks rounded out the scoring in the 60th minute when junior Jackie Renda, from the right side, made a long pass in front and Carotenuto found the wide open cage for her sixth goal of the season. It gave Lehigh a 5-0 advantage, which proved to be the final.

"It's been a focus point for the last couple weeks, building our offense and understanding the space we need to be in to score goals," said Dallmeyer. "I'm really, really pleased with 11 goals on the weekend. That's a pretty big deal for the team and the program.

Along with Lehigh's 20-0 edge in shots, the Mountain Hawks held a 5-0 advantage in penalty corners. Overall, Lehigh held a 50-9 edge in shots over the two games this weekend.

"Our defense has been really strong the last couple games," said Dallmeyer. "Their confidence continues to go up, which is helping them perform consistently at a high level. Their ability to be proactive rather than reactive is really helping us to deny shots and shots on goal."

The Mountain Hawks return to action next weekend when they play at Boston University on Saturday (1 p.m.) and UMass-Lowell on Sunday (1 p.m.).

"We have four games left and they're four really big games," said Dallmeyer. "For confidence alone, this was crucial for us to be able to pull out four games in a row with really strong performances to give us a boost we need going into four really tough games."
