Mountain Hawks hang tough in 1-0 loss vs. Providence

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh's defense hung tough against a strong Providence opponent, remaining scoreless until the 48th minute when the Friars scored the game's only goal in a 1-0 defeat on Sunday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks have now dropped three straight one-goal finals in a trio of highly-competitive games. Freshman goalkeeper Paige Innarella was strong in her first-career start, stopping seven-of-eight shots sent her way.
Â
"Overall, I am really pleased with our progress this weekend because we played two teams (Bucknell and Providence) who are very skilled, and our defense kept us within reach of winning the games," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "Paige had a really great performance today and our defense overall has been really disciplined about understanding how to play solid 1v1 defense and working on our footwork. It's starting to show."
Â
Despite the Friars controlling possession for much of the game, Lehigh had a chance to tie down the stretch, generating two penalty corners within the final six minutes.
Â
"Our biggest issue right now is possessing the ball moving forward and being able to hold onto it for longer periods of time so we can execute and draw opportunities in front of the net," said Dallmeyer. "That's something we've been struggling with and needs to happen in order for us to win games. We have one really big component to the game that's finally coming together for us, but the second one will win us games and we need to make sure that's happening."
Â
A scoreless first half saw Providence fire nine shots, four of which were on goal, but the Mountain Hawk defense stood tall.
Â
The Friars didn't score until their 17th shot of the evening as Kali Kilmer corralled a loose ball off a scramble following a penalty corner, beating Innarella with a lot shot to give her side a 1-0 lead.
Â
Lehigh's best chances came in the final minutes of the second half as two penalty corners led to a pair of shots from senior Marissa Glatt, one of which was stopped by Providence goalkeeper Megan Guilbert.
Â
Final shots were 21-2 in favor of the Friars while Providence held a 10-3 edge in penalty corners. Innarrella recorded three saves in the first half and four in the second.
Â
"Being a first-year in goal is not an easy feat and can be really nerve racking," said Dallmeyer. "I felt like she had a lot of composure and really handled herself well back there."
Â
Along with Innarella's seven saves, junior Laura Yuh and sophomore Lindsay Alvarez also added defensive stops.
Â
"Laura overall had a phenomenal weekend," said Dallmeyer. "She's been gaining confidence in herself and has been more aggressive, which I don't think is in her nature. She's definitely a thinker and we've had to get her to trust her instincts and really go for the ball. When she does it, she's phenomenal. This weekend, she really shined for us in the backfield, which is why I think we were able to keep the score so tight."
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action next weekend when they head to our nation's capital to face American on Saturday (12 p.m.) and Georgetown on Sunday (1 p.m.).
