Forrest Hat Trick Not Enough as Lehigh Falls in OT

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Mark Forrest did just about everything he could to will his team to a victory on Saturday afternoon as he recorded a second half hat trick to bring the Mountain Hawks back form a 3-0 deficit. Seton Hall ultimately had the final word as the Pirates converted a penalty kick in the 99th minute to claim the 4-3 victory in overtime.
"I think we showed a lot of character and resiliency in how we were able to come back," said head coach Dean Koski. "I felt like we had the momentum in overtime and it's unfortunate the game had to end the way that it did, but ultimately the slow start is what really hurt us today."
The Mountain Hawks (1-3) struggled to find any sort of rhythm in the first half and Seton Hall (2-2-1) added to Lehigh's woes by putting up two goals through the first 41 minutes of play. The Pirates could not have drawn up a better start as they seemed to be clicking on both ends of the field as evidence of a 2-0 advantage on the scoreboard and an 11-4 advantage in the shot column heading into halftime.
Out of the break, the Pirates picked up right where they left off and put another tally on the board less than three minutes into the second half. With a 3-0 lead through 47 minutes of play and having controlled the pace to that point, the Pirates seemed to have the game well within hand.
Seton Hall's comfortable lead soon became compromised as goals by Forrest in the 52nd and 63rd minutes had Lehigh in contention for the first time all day. Junior Doyle Tuvesson also played a crucial role in getting Lehigh back in the thick of things as he created both opportunities for Forrest and supplied pressure throughout the second half.
"Mark and Doyle put together a nice performance as they both came to life in the second half," said Koski. "Mark did a great job of finishing his opportunities and Doyle really excelled at creating chances for Mark."
Lehigh continued to roll with the hot foot and in the 78th minute Forrest finished a one-timer on a feed from junior David Zipkin for his third tally of the day.
The Mountain Hawks completely flipped the script in the second half as they totaled 12 shots and three corners compared to just four shots and one corner in the first half. The defense also had an improved presence in the second half as Lehigh managed to get bodies in front shots, particularly late in the second half, and senior goalkeeper Jacob Gottwald came up three saves in the second stanza.
In the overtime period, Seton Hall regained some of the momentum it had lost in the second half and the Pirates started to apply offensive pressure as they desperately tried to avoid blowing their once 3-0 lead. Seton Hall pressed the Lehigh defense and eventually drew a foul just inside the 18-yard line. With the game on the line and the thought of squandering away a three-goal lead at home looming, Seton Hall's Andres Arcila stepped up to take the penalty and converted with confidence to clinch the win for the Pirates.
Seton Hall finished with a 25-16 advantage in total shots with Lehigh owning a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal. The two sides drew even with four corners each.
The hat trick by Forrest is the second of his career. His first came in the 3-0 victory over Fordham last season.
The Mountain Hawks scored more goals Saturday than they had scored in total in the three games leading up to Saturday's contest.
Lehigh will return to action on Tuesday with a return trip to northern New Jersey to face Farleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m.
