BETHLEHEM, Pa. – While most Lehigh freshmen prepare to wrap-up their first week of classes, first-year wrestler Jordan Wood is currently in Macon, France, preparing to represent the United States in freestyle at the UWW Junior World Championships. Wood will compete at 120 kg on Sunday, September 4, the final day of the championships.
Wood earned the right to represent the U.S. by winning Junior World Team Trials in Texas in May. He went 3-0 to claim the challenge tournament and then swept Rylee Striefel of Minnesota in the best-of-three finals.
The Boyertown, Pa. native was the No. 10 recruit in the class of 2016 according to InterMat and the No. 20 recruit according to FloWrestling.org. Wood won a state title in folkstyle as a high school junior but missed the state tournament in 2016 after suffering a late-season injury.
Wood has represented the United States previously at the Cadet level. He won a World Silver Medal at the Cadet level in 2014 and finished fifth last year.
A projected heavyweight for the Mountain Hawks, Wood is expected to study in an integrated Arts and Engineering program at Lehigh.
Qualification rounds on the final day of the UWW Junior World Championships begin Sunday at 10 a.m. local time (4 a.m. ET) from Macon, France, with the finals set for 6 p.m. (2 p.m. ET).
