UWW Junior Freestyle WTT Results
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Incoming Lehigh freshman Jordan Wood has earned the right to represent the United States at this summer's Junior World Championships, after winning the UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials Saturday in Irving, Texas. One of three Lehigh wrestlers competing for the Lehigh Valley Wrestling Club, Wood went 3-0 to claim the challenge tournament title at 120 kg and then swept Rylee Streifel of Minnesota to win the best-of-three finals.
Â
Wood will now compete at 120 kg at the Junior World Championships, Aug. 30-Sept. 4 in Macon, France.
Â
Saturday in Texas, Wood began his 5-0 day with a 5-0 decision over Youssif Hemida of Maryland and then topped Drexel's Joseph Goodheart 9-2. In the finals of the challenge tournament, Wood edged Buffalo's Jake Gunning 5-4.
Â
With his win in the challenge tournament, Wood earned the right to face Streifel, the champion from Junior Nationals earlier this month. Wood did not allow a point in two finals matches, blanking Streifel 5-0 in match one and then posting an 11-0 technical fall to secure his spot on the Junior World Team.
Â
The No. 10 recruit in the class of 2016 according to InterMat and the No. 20 recruit according to FloWrestling.org, Wood won a state championship in folkstyle as a high school junior, but a late season injury cost the Boyertown, Pa. native a shot at a second straight state title.
Â
Wood is no stranger to international competition. He won a World Silver Medal at the Cadet level in 2014 and finished fifth at the Cadet World Championships last year.
Â
Deferred freshmen Ryan Pomrinca and Jordan Kutler also competed at the UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials, with Pomrinca going 0-2 at 66 kg on Saturday and Kutler rebounding from a first round loss to go 4-2 overall, placing fourth at 74 kg.Â
