Lehigh’s strong effort falls short to top-seeded Navy in Patriot League Semifinals

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Top-seeded Navy rallied to win a tight doubles point before taking three singles matches en route to a 4-1 win over the Lehigh men's tennis team in the Patriot League Semifinals Saturday at the Ulrich Varsity Courts. The Mountain Hawks made their seventh semifinal appearance in the last eight years and Lehigh's strong season comes to an end at 15-6 overall.
"I thought the doubles point was on our racquet and we came up just short," said Howard Talmud '77 Head Coach Wouter Hendrix. "I give Navy a lot of credit. We knew it was going to be tough after we lost the doubles point, but we fought really hard and I'm really proud of our team."
The duo of sophomore Jack Petersen and freshman George Cooper opened doubles action with a 6-4 win at the third flight before Navy took the second flight 6-2. Senior Jeremy Kochman and junior Graham Lehman fought to send the top flight to a tiebreak, but the Mids were able to earn a 7-6 (5) win to take the doubles point.
Junior Ethan Bogard opened singles action with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Andrey Majkic at the sixth flight to even the match at 1-1. Navy's Walker Sims followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over junior Colin Nardella to give the Mids a 2-1 match advantage. Kochman fell 6-1, 6-2 at the top flight before Navy's Thomas Pecor clinched the match for the Mids with a 6-3, 6-4 win over sophomore Jack Petersen at the second flight.
Junior Tyler Hansen was leading 7-5, 0-6, 3-2 in No. 5 singles when Navy clinched the match.
