LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team wasn't able to get much going offensively on a cold Sunday afternoon at Bucknell's Depew Field as the Bison were able to claim the final two games of a four-game league-opening series by scores of 11-2 and 4-3. The Mountain Hawks fall to 10-17 overall and 1-3 in league action, while Bucknell improves to 12-17 and 3-1 in Patriot League play.
"We battled back and played a tough second game," said head coach Sean Leary. "I thought Kevin Boswick pitched outstanding in relief in the second game. We need to execute better if we want to win these close Patriot League games."
Senior Mike Garzillo and junior David Young both recorded two hits in the day's two games combined, while both of Garzillo's knocks were doubles. Garzillo also recorded his 200th career hit during Lehigh's series at Bucknell and is currently tied for third on Lehigh's career hit leaderboard. All five of Lehigh's runs were knocked in a scored by five different players.
The Bison got on the board first in the day's opener, a seven-inning game, as a two-out hit by pitch was followed by an RBI double from Spencer Stokes to put Bucknell ahead 1-0 through one inning. Three singles and a sacrifice fly then helped the Bison add two more in the following frame before Bucknell plated six runs run in the third inning to take a 9-0 lead.
The Mountain Hawks were able to get two back in the top of the fifth as back-to-back singles from junior John Scarr and senior Mackey Price were followed by a Bucknell error to load the bases. A pair of RBI groundouts from junior Jacen Nalesnik and sophomore James Bleming followed to pull Lehigh within 9-2. The Bison added on two fifth-inning runs and went on to win 11-2. Lehigh freshman starter Ethan Frohman suffered the loss, while Bucknell starter Dan Keller earned the win.
Following a scoreless first inning in the day's second game, a full nine-inning affair, junior Patrick Donnelly led off the top of the second with a single to left center before Young sent an RBI double to right center to put Lehigh on the board. A groundout moved Young to third before Scarr recorded a sacrifice fly to center to put Lehigh ahead 2-0.
Lehigh junior starter Matt Kozemchak allowed just one hit through his first 3.1 innings of work until a one-out single in the bottom of the fourth was followed by an RBI triple from Sam Clark got the Bison on the board. Bucknell then added a run on a groundball from Alex O'Neill to tie the game at 2-2 through four innings. The Bison then tacked on a run in the fifth thanks to a one-out triple that was followed by an RBI single from Danny Rafferty to jump ahead 3-2 and end Kozemchak's outing.
Following a scoreless sixth inning, Lehigh was able to tie the series finale at 3-3 in the top of the seventh as Garzillo roped a one-out double to left center before stealing third base and being driven home by an RBI groundout from Donnelly. Senior reliever Kevin Boswick kept the Bison off the board in the sixth and seventh innings, but Bucknell used three base hits to plate the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth. Bucknell reliever Jeff Gottesman then sat the Mountain Hawks down in order in the top of the ninth to secure the 4-3 win.
Boswick suffered the loss despite throwing 3.1 one-run frames, while Gottesman picked up the win. Kozemchak finished with a line of three runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
Lehigh returns to action Tuesday when the Mountain Hawks head to Rider for the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic before hosting Coppin State Wednesday at Legacy Park.
