BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The fifth-seeded Lehigh men's tennis team lost a close doubles point, but battled back to win the top four flights of singles to capture a big 4-1 win over No. 4 Colgate in the Patriot League Quarterfinals Friday afternoon inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks advance to the Patriot League Semifinals for the seventh time in the last eight years and will face top-seeded Navy Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Ulrich Varsity Courts.
"Today was a special day and was a celebration of a whole year of hard work," said Howard Talmud '77 Head Coach Wouter Hendrix. "We were seeded fifth and Colgate was fourth, but I told the guys before the match that we were battle tested since we were the only Patriot League team that played everyone. We've been through so much adversity and for us to pull through after losing the doubles point is just an incredible feeling."
The duo of juniors Colin Nardella and Ethan Bogard opened doubles action with a 6-3 win at the second flight. Colgate evened the doubles matches with a 6-4 win at the top flight before the Raiders team of Jake Hirschberg and Win Reynolds came out on top of a tight 7-5 match against sophomore Jack Petersen and freshman George Cooper at the third flight to clinch the doubles point for Colgate.
Petersen opened singles action with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Colgate's Nick Laub at the second flight to even the match at 1-1. Senior Jeremy Kochman took the first set from Colgate's Jacob Daugherty 6-4 at the top flight of singles before falling 0-6 in the second set. Kochman then battled for a 6-4 victory in the third set to defeat Daugherty, a player he dropped the regular-season meeting to, and give Lehigh a 2-1 match lead.
"Jeremy won today for us," said Hendrix. "For Jeremy to step up on the biggest stage in this time of his career, I'm so happy for him and so grateful that he's part of the team."
Colgate's Bobby Alter took the first set at No. 4 singles over Nardella in tiebreak 7-6 (3), but Nardella fought back to take the second set 7-5 before earning a 6-0 victory in the third set. Cooper also dropped his first set of No. 3 singles 7-5 to Colgate's Noah Rosenblat, but took the final two sets by scores of 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the 4-1 quarterfinal victory for the Mountain Hawks.
Junior Tyler Hansen was leading 6-3 after one set of No. 5 singles, while Bogard trailed 4-6, 1-0 at the sixth flight in a pair of matches that did not finish once Cooper clinched the Lehigh victory.
The Mountain Hawks will face defending champion and top-seeded Navy in Saturday's semifinals at 10 a.m. The Mids defeated Lafayette 4-0 in the quarterfinals Friday morning to punch their ticket to the semifinals. Lehigh fell 4-3 at Navy in the regular-season meeting on March 26.
"We played Navy well on their base and came very close to winning," said Hendrix. "We're really excited about the opportunity of potentially upsetting them. We'll have to play a really clean match, but being outside on our home courts is definitely going to give us a nice lift."
